Responsibilities

  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of complex problems in area of expertise with the ability to visualize long-term results and assess impacts on a system-wide basis.

  • Basic/Required Qualifications
  • For Senior Engineer:
  • Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or PE
  • Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer
  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree
  • For Engineer III:
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program and four (4) years of relevant experience.
  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree
  • Preferred Qualifications - for Senior Engineer level
  • Licensure as a Professional Engineer
  • Skilled in Civil Engineering theories and principles. Progressive Civil Engineering experience with emphasis on high‑voltage substations and utility infrastructure.
  • Proficient in researching engineering designs, evaluating alternatives, making sound decisions, and presenting recommendations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to serve on multi‑disciplinary teams and interact with stakeholders, contractors, and regulatory agencies.
  • Skilled in the principles of project management.
  • Capable of managing multiple projects concurrently while meeting scope, schedule, budget, and quality expectations.
  • Ability to lead and mentor junior engineers and designers, including technical oversight and QA/QC review.
  • Knowledge of Civil Engineering applicable to electric substations, including:
  • Grading, drainage, and erosion & sediment control
  • Ability to read topographic and boundary surveys
  • Foundations (drilled piers, spread footings, piles)
  • Oil containment systems, fire walls, and retaining wall design
  • Strong understanding of geotechnical principles, soil reports, and foundation selection for substation applications
  • Familiarity with applicable

Position Summary The Senior Civil Engineer position will support the modification, expansion, or development of electric substations for Duke Energy Florida in Lake Mary, FL. This position will primarily focus on performing complex substation civil designs, mentoring junior engineers, reviewing consultant engineering firm designs, and continuing to improve our internal Civil Engineering procedures and job aids. This is a career/senior level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level manage work in engineering areas of specialization, with minimal supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and to have the ability to work independently, with guidance limited to unusual or complex projects or issues. They are fully competent in use of concepts and procedures. They identify problems, develop solutions, and take actions to resolve.
