Position Summary: The Medical College of Wisconsin's Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery is seeking a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to provide specialty medical care at Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa, WI. The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) works as a member of a multidisciplinary health care team and will contribute to excellence in patient care, patient safety, quality improvement, and teaching. Position Highlights: This is a full-time (1.0 FTE), salaried (exempt) inpatient position supporting the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital. The APP functions as a core member of the inpatient team, providing high-acuity postoperative and perioperative care for patients undergoing cardiac and thoracic surgery. Key responsibilities include: Conducting comprehensive patient assessments-histories, physical exams, and evaluation of physical, cognitive, and psychosocial status-across a complex surgical population. Ordering and interpreting laboratory values, imaging, and diagnostic studies, and developing individualized pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical management plans. Managing postoperative recovery and longitudinal inpatient care, monitoring treatment effectiveness and adjusting plans in response to clinical changes. Performing bedside procedures within scope and credentialing, and providing hands-on support in the perioperative environment. Collaborating closely with CT surgery attendings, fellows, residents, nursing staff, intensivists, and subspecialty consultants to deliver coordinated, team-based care. Educating and counseling patients and families on diagnoses, procedures, recovery expectations, and discharge planning. Documenting thoroughly and accurately within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR). Schedule: Full-time, 1.0 FTE | Salaried (Exempt) 10-12 hour rotating shifts; average 40 hours per week Monthly rotating schedule that may flex based on practice needs, including days, evenings, and occasional weekends and holidays Position requires flexibility to support coverage across the service, including high census periods, planned leaves, and unexpected absences Opportunity to pick up additional shifts as mutually agreed upon Reports to: APP Manager, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery Department/Division Highlights: The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin includes 12 faculty surgeons-actively growing toward 15-supported by a team of 20+ advanced practice providers and 14 perfusionists. The division performs nearly 2,000 adult cardiac and thoracic procedures annually, with volumes growing through expanded regional referrals and deeper integration within the Heart, Vascular and Thoracic Service Line. A highly coordinated, multidisciplinary team delivers 24/7 APP and perfusionist coverage across all service lines. Adult Cardiac Surgery encompasses the full spectrum of coronary, valvular, aortic, and mechanical circulatory support procedures, including the state's largest heart transplant program. Faculty provide surgical leadership in the multidisciplinary Structural Heart Program, offering TAVR and emerging transcatheter mitral therapies alongside conventional surgery. A well-established MCS/ECMO program serves as a regional referral center for cardiogenic shock and advanced mechanical support. General Thoracic Surgery provides advanced surgical care for malignant and non-malignant diseases of the chest, with an emphasis on robotic and minimally invasive techniques. Lung transplantation is offered through a well-integrated program with Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, and thoracic oncology care is delivered in close coordination with the Cancer Center.
