About the role

Holland & Knight LLP is seeking a Legislative Assistant to join its Government Section, Federal Government Affairs and State & Local Policy & Regulation Practices in the Firm's Denver, Colorado office. This role will support the Firm's Colorado state legislative and regulatory advocacy, while also assisting with federal lobbying efforts, client development initiatives, and background research for policy matters. The Legislative Assistant will work closely with Government Section partners and professionals in Colorado and Washington, D.C., coordinating legislative, regulatory, and political activities on behalf of Firm clients. The ideal candidate will have experience with legislative processes, strong research and writing skills, and an interest in working at the intersection of public policy and government relations.

Responsibilities

  • Colorado State Legislative & Regulatory Advocacy
  • Advocate and lobby for client interests before the Colorado General Assembly, state executive branch agencies, and local government entities under the supervision of Government Section partners and professionals.
  • Arrange, coordinate, and participate in meetings with state legislators, legislative staff, executive agency officials, and other stakeholders, independently and alongside clients and Government Section colleagues.
  • Track and monitor legislative session and interim committee meetings, hearings, agency proceedings, and other governmental activity.
  • Produce legislative schedules, weekly tracking reports during the legislative session, and regular legislative status updates for internal and client use.
  • Prepare customized client reports during the legislative session (weekly) and outside of session (monthly), tailored to each client's specific policy interests.
  • Federal Lobbying & Policy Support
  • Provide research and analytical support for federal lobbying initiatives, including monitoring congressional activity, federal agencies, and regulatory developments.
  • Assist with preparation of issue briefs, background memoranda, talking points, and meeting materials for federal advocacy efforts.
  • Support coordination between Colorado‑based state advocacy and Washington, D.C.‑based federal lobbying strategies.
  • Client Development & Practice Support
  • Assist with preparation of client materials, presentations, legislative forecasts, and end‑of‑session wrap‑up reports for distribution in electronic and print formats.
  • Support business development efforts, including background research for client pitches, proposals, and RFP responses.
  • Maintain and update Government Section client information, contact lists, and legislative engagement records.
  • Political & Compliance Coordination
  • Coordinate timely compliance with Colorado lobbying disclosure, ethics, and reporting requirements, maintaining accurate records of filings.
  • In coordination with the Firm's Political Affairs Manager, assist with political activities of the Firm and its clients, including PAC‑related tracking, political events, fundraisers, and legislative briefings, in compliance with applicable laws.

Requirements

  • Required
  • Bachelor's degree in political science, public policy, government or a related field.
  • 1-3 years of experience working in a state or federal legislative office, government agency, government relations firm, or other substantive public policy role.
  • Strong writing, research, and analytical skills, with the ability to synthesize complex legislative and regulatory issues.
  • Solid understanding of political and legislative processes, particularly at the state level.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to meet deadlines in a fast‑paced environment.
  • High proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Preferred
  • Direct experience with the Colorado General Assembly or Colorado state agencies.
  • Experience supporting lobbying or government affairs activities at the state and/or federal level.
  • Familiarity with legislative tracking tools and policy research platforms.
  • Interest in long‑term professional growth in public policy & government relations
  • The base salary range for this position is $70,000 - $82,500/yr. An individual's actual compensation will depend on the individual's qualifications and experience. In addition to the base compensation, Holland & Knight provides bonus opportunities and an exceptional benefits package.
