General Description: The School Counseling Specialist provides leadership, coordination, and support for the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of comprehensive school counseling programs aligned with national and state standards (Pre-Kindergarten - 12). This position also partners with internal teams and external agencies to expand resources, respond to crises, and advance equitable access to opportunities for all students. Essential Job Functions: Supports the development, management, and delivery of comprehensive school counseling programs that address the academic achievement, social/emotional development, and college and career readiness needs of all students in alignment with the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model, Standards for School Counseling Programs in Virginia Public Schools, and the school division Works collaboratively with building administrators, other specialists, and central office administration to support school counseling programs Provides coaching and leadership for school counselors to ensure best practices and to support the delivery of comprehensive school counseling programs through site visits, small groups, and virtual meetings Coordinates, develops, and delivers relevant professional learning and training opportunities for school counselors and other division-wide staff based on identified areas of need Supports division-wide programming and initiatives that support all three domains of service: academic achievement, social/emotional development, and college and career readiness Supports evidence-based school counseling practices that result in positive student outcomes in the areas of behavior, attendance, and achievement Assists schools in navigating critical and emergency situations, and supports division-wide mental health crisis responses in the aftermath of school-community emergencies/crises Works in partnership with the division's mental health team to support school division initiatives Collaborates with school and division stakeholders to advocate for equity and access to advanced level coursework and life-ready experiences for all students Collaborates with external community agencies and partners that may serve as an academic and mental/behavioral health resource for students and schools Gathers and analyzes relevant data to guide school counseling program planning, inform practice, and evaluate program impact on student achievement, behavior, and attendance May perform other duties as assigned Budgetary Responsibility: This position has no budgetary responsibilities. Report Preparation: This position works in collaboration with the supervisor for data collection, presentations, and reports needed to support functions of the Office of School Counseling and Mental Health Services, the school division, and the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE). Equipment Operation: Uses typical office equipment, including computers, copiers, and scanners Contacts: This position has regular contact with school counselors, administrators, student services personnel, central office personnel, teachers, students, staff, and parents. This position also has frequent contact with public agency representatives for collaboration of resources and service delivery for students. Work Direction/Supervision: This position provides instructions, advice, training, and guidance on how school counseling tasks must be completed, but does not supervise others. Decision-Making: This position performs the majority of functions independently, and seeks supervisor guidance as needed.
