About the role
We are seeking a new Editor to develop our behavioural and health sciences books programme across India and the wider APAC region. You will acquire and publish content across a range of formats, including monographs, edited collections, SpringerBriefs, textbooks, reference works and professional titles. The role involves managing an existing portfolio while also developing new areas for growth. You will identify authors, negotiate contract terms, and manage the development and submission of book projects, overseeing each title from proposal through to publication. You will develop your list in line with wider team, imprint and company strategy.
Responsibilities
- Identify authors and support them in developing their projects, acting as a point of contact throughout the publishing process
- Solicit, read and evaluate book proposals, assessing their suitability for the list and the market, and managing the external peer review process
- Meet goals set by editorial management, including contracts signed, manuscripts handed over to production and books published
- Maintain key relationships with series editors, authors and relevant academic or professional communities
- Manage and regularly review the performance of the backlist, including making decisions on new editions
- Conduct market and competitor research in your subject area, with awareness of national and international trends
- Travel to academic conferences, both domestic and international, as required
- Work closely with editorial support teams to ensure projects are delivered to schedule
- Undertake other responsibilities as assigned by the manager
- Experience, Skills and Qualifications
- Essential
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with good numerical and IT skills and strong attention to detail
- Excellent negotiation skills, with the ability to work effectively with a wide range of stakeholders and build strong professional networks
- Excellent interpersonal and organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise a high volume of work and use your own initiative
- A resourceful and proactive approach to resolving problems and queries
- Strong team-working skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues at all levels while also working independently when required
- Degree-level education or equivalent professional experience
- Demonstrable experience in academic, scientific or professional publishing
- Desirable
- Knowledge of, or experience in, the relevant subject area or a related field
- Experience in book commissioning
- A degree or postgraduate qualification in psychology, public health, or a related social science or STEM field
- Good presentation skills
