This role should be leading the strategic development, execution, and continuous improvement of the educational programs. This role is responsible for ensuring that all coding staff are highly proficient, compliant, and up-to-date with international coding standards. The Director oversees a team of coding educators, collaborates with operational leaders, creates more self-sufficient and engaging videos to promote self-learning.
Responsibilities
- Strategic Leadership & Program Development
- Design Curriculum: Create, implement, and maintain structured training programs for ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, HCPCS, etc.
- Scale Operations: Standardize training methodologies across global delivery centers
- Career Pathways: Establish clear professional growth and onboarding tracks for newly hired coders, cross-training programs for existing staff, and leadership tracks for senior coders.
- Team Management & Mentorship
- Direct Supervision: Support in Recruitment of Medical Coding Instructors, Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), and Coders.
- Performance Metrics: Define, monitor, and report on trainer performance, training completion rates, and post-training coder proficiency scores.
- Quality, Compliance & Audit Support
- Compliance Alignment: Align all educational materials with the latest updates from CMS, AMA, AHIMA, AAPC, and OIG guidelines.
- Remediation Training: Partner with the Quality Assurance (QA) team to analyze audit error trends and rapidly deploy targeted root-cause training to correct accuracy gaps.
- Technology Integration: Lead training initiatives for internal software updates, Electronic Health Record (EHR) migrations, and AI-assisted computer-assisted coding (CAC) tools.
- Required Qualifications
- Education & Certifications
- Degree: Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management (HIM), Healthcare Administration, Business, or a related field (Master's degree preferred).
- Core Credentials: Must hold at least one active, premier credential from AAPC or AHIMA :CPC (Certified Professional Coder)CCS (Certified Coding Specialist)RHIA / RHIT (Registered Health Information Administrator / Technician)
- Preferred Credential: Certified Professional Coding Instructor ( CPC-I ) or equivalent credential demonstrating instructional expertise.
- Experience & Skills
- Domain Expertise: Minimum of 12-15 years of progressive experience in medical coding operations, with at least 5 years dedicated strictly to healthcare training, instructional design, or academic leadership.
- Analytical Skills: Strong capability to interpret complex clinical documentation, medical necessity criteria, and coding audit metrics to turn data trends into actionable lesson plans.
