We are currently hiring for a Shipper Packer 1 to join our team in Ottawa. The role will entail: Primary Responsibilities Responsible for packing and shipping requirements/activities associated with outgoing shipments. Responsible to provide weights and measures to customs and traffic. Ensure its packaged in the most cost effective manner and / or to contractual requirements. Selects and prepares items for shipment; enters transactions on ERP computer system (such as issuing serial numbers) locating/tracking inventory; occasionally generates way bill numbers; attaches documentation and applies bar code labels; provides product to drivers. Communicates with carriers to arrange transportation. Review, interpret, and implements packaging specifications. Loads and unloads trucks. Moves goods into and out of vehicles and inventory using Company vehicles and material handling equipment e.g. truck, forklift and pallet lifter, as required. Fabricates cardboard boxes and barrier bags. Orders and assembles crates for larger shipments when required. Responsible for finished goods area; ensures goods are not removed without proper paperwork. Investigates and resolves discrepancies related to shipping instructions and items in finished goods. Completes cycle counts of finished goods inventory Using software program, create Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) labels for shipments. Provides training and guidance to junior personnel, wherein necessary. Works with supervisor and shipping team to ensure priorities are met. Performs other related duties as required. Education and Experience Equivalent to a Grade 12 level of education at a secondary school. Requires over 2 years, up to and including 3 years of relevant experience in a shipping/warehouse environment, including knowledge of an ERP system Valid provincial driver's license and forklift operator's license. Basic computer skills to efficiently enter locate and retrieve data and/or documentation. Crane Training Complexity Work tasks are somewhat routine and governed by well established departmental processes and procedures. Uses judgement and problem-solving skills to identify and resolve discrepancies in finished goods inventory e.g. visual inspections. Expected to resolves problems within scope of tasks unless of a serious nature eg. reconcile that goods are there; data is accurate; weights and measures are established. May elevate issues to senior Shipper/Packer. Pack goods according to Mil Spec requirements. Initiative and Accountability Work is assigned daily and prioritized; may work from oral or written instructions. Work is monitored by task progress/completion and quality. Accountable for the timely completion and quality of own work. Responsible to safeguard people, equipment and property within stated guidelines in the completion of tasks. Uses initiative to: prepare for shipping requirements from initiators e.g. buyers, ensuring appropriate packaging is ready for quick response; learn new shipper/packer processes. Communication and Guidance Giving Communicates effectively (verbal/written) with team members and support groups. Interacts regularly with internal customers to process requests and resolve issues in the finished goods area. Regular contact with external resources e.g. shipping companies for special orders, truckers to sort out shipments. Assists other team members to achieve assigned tasks. Keeps supervisor and team informed of progress and situations requiring attention of others. May provide guidance to General Helper. Contributes ideas to improve processes. Effort and Working Environment Physical Effort Daily labour including extensive movement of materials for continuous periods of time, climbing (ladders), standing, stooping and lifting/carrying of considerable amounts weight. Required at times to handle/push carts containing equipment and units (>50lbs). Sensory Effort Some eye/hand coordination for moderate periods of time e.g. cutting tools, counting. Moderate periods of visual attention for data entry. Working Environment Works with heavy equipment and tools daily. Some exposure to dust/dirt and disagreeable weather conditions (loading docks, driving truck). Security It is a requirement that General Dynamics Mission Systems-Canada be registered with the Canadian Controlled Goods program and that all of its workforce be security assessed. Successful applicants must meet all applicable security requirements, including but not limited to the ability to obtain and maintain a Canadian government security clearance. Applicants may be required to meet additional security requirements in order to gain access to technical data, classified areas or information that is subject to international regulations.
