About the role

The State Bureau of Investigation's mission is to serve Sheriffs, Police Chiefs, and District Attorneys as well as State and Federal partners, by investigating crimes and providing technical assistance in order to increase public safety for the citizens of the state of North Carolina. The SBI does so by conducting criminal investigations of allegations in areas of jurisdiction including narcotics, arson, election laws, misuse of state property, environmental crimes, human trafficking, child sexual abuse in day care centers, and threats made against public officials. The SBI provides support to local agencies related to computer crime investigations, use of force investigations, deaths in custody, crime scenes, financial crimes, missing and endangered persons, public corruption, cold cases, K9, special response team, bomb squad, and air wing. The SBI serves as North Carolina's repository of information on criminal history records, fingerprint identification, expungements, sex offender registry, and concealed handgun permits. The SBI manages the North Carolina Information Sharing and Analysis Center (ISAAC), which is the fusion center for the state of North Carolina, as well as the Behavioral Threat Assessment Unit, which assesses and manages threats of mass violence. Description of Work The primary purpose of this position is to process concealed handgun permit applicant fingerprints submitted through county sheriff's offices throughout the state and process fingerprint and name-based searches received from various agencies that require applicants to have a background search completed for employment purposes. Through state and federal fingerprint and criminal history database searches, the unit provides criminal history information search results back to the submitting agency, allowing them to make an informed decision in determining eligibility for concealed handgun permit issuance or for suitability for employment. Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to: - Assist in processing concealed handgun permit submissions to completion - Perform background searches on live scan and manual submissions received through the North Carolina Applicant Tracking System (NCATS) - Perform descriptive data entry of hard-copy fingerprints received for manual input into the SAFIS System - Process incoming mail and distribute to various Criminal Information and Identification Section units - Submit weekly work report and assist with other duties as determined by the supervisor Position/Physical Requirements: - Must be able to work Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-5 p.m. work schedule (can adjust times with supervisor approval). - Must be able to process repetitive material and processes. - Must be able to lift up to 20 lbs. with or without accommodation. - Must be a U.S. citizen due to security requirements for accessing SBI applications to which the person in this position must have access. - Obtaining Division of Criminal Information (DCI) Network certification within 6 months of hire is required for this position.
