About the role

Nelo's marketplace is growing. More merchants, more checkout surfaces, more consumer touchpoints that need intentional design. Today, one designer covers product end to end. That is working now, but it will not scale as engineering headcount grows and the surface area expands. This is the first dedicated design hire for Nelo's marketplace, and it is a chance to own a real surface early in your career rather than push pixels inside someone else's system. You will own the design layer for everything that touches the online store: navigation, checkout flows, merchant storefronts, and promotional placements. The work is primarily web and mobile web. We expect this to suit a designer with roughly three to four years of experience who wants more ownership than their current role offers. If you are early in your career and hungry to run a product area, this is built for you.

Responsibilities

  • Marketplace navigation, checkout, and discovery. The current navigation has room to improve. You will diagnose the friction and design the fix.
  • New merchant integrations and promotional placements. When a merchant wants a custom checkout experience or a seasonal pop-up, you design it.
  • Cross-functional working sessions. You will work in the marketplace working group alongside the PM and engineering team, translating product requirements into design decisions and defending those decisions with rationale.
  • Marketing and communication assets. Campaign emails, social posts, promotional banners. This work shows up at Nelo and you will be expected to handle it. If you have only ever done pure product design and plan to keep it that way, this role is not the right fit.
  • Collaboration with Brand Design on visual consistency. You will not own the brand, but you will work alongside our Brand Designer to make sure marketplace design does not diverge from it.
  • Why you should apply
  • You have shipped real product work in e-commerce or fintech and can walk through what you designed, why you made those decisions, and what you would change now. Roughly three to four years of relevant experience is the sweet spot.
  • Your portfolio shows range. Not only wireframes and flows, but work that reveals taste: layouts that breathe, hierarchy that guides, type and color choices you can defend. Personal projects count, especially if they show curiosity outside of product design.
  • You design well in ambiguity. Given a problem like "the navigation is not working," you ask the right questions, form a point of view, and produce something rather than waiting for a detailed brief.
  • You pick up tools quickly. AI tools, Figma features, basic HTML to track down a color in an email template. These are not blockers for you. They are shortcuts.
  • You want real ownership. The marketplace design is yours. That means the visibility is real, the feedback is direct, and the impact shows up in product.
  • Why you should NOT apply
  • Your strongest work is component governance and design system documentation. That is valuable, but it is not what this role needs right now.
  • You expect a defined scope and plan to defend it. A banner needs to go out, a last-minute email needs a layout, and you are the designer available. If that feels outside your job, this will create friction.
  • You only grow inside a formal program. You will get direct mentorship from Lila and real ownership from day one, but this is a lean team, so your growth comes from exposure and responsibility rather than a structured curriculum.
  • You are skeptical about AI tools. Every team at Nelo uses AI as part of the workflow. If that is something you want to avoid, you will be working against the culture instead of with it.
  • How we work
  • Around 60 people at Nelo. Lean and cross-functional by design.
  • This role is based in Mexico City. You will spend regular time in the office with the marketplace team, and there is flexibility to work from home part of the week.
  • The design stack is Figma, Adobe (Photoshop, Illustrator), and whatever tools you bring that make the work better.
  • Nelo uses Claude as part of the daily workflow across every team.
