About the role

Closing date: 24/07/2026, 00:01am The School of Psychology and Social Work at the University of Hull is seeking to appoint an outstanding academic in Psychology with expertise in applied health research. The post may be offered at Band 8 (Lecturer salary range £48,822 - £56,535) or Band 9 (Senior Lecturer/Reader; salary range £59,966 - £67,468), depending on experience. The successful candidate will: Strengthen applied health research in Psychology, expanding the scale, diversity, and impact of our externally funded portfolio. Connect our strengths in basic cognitive science with applied health and care challenges, supporting translation from mechanisms to interventions and service-level impact. Contribute to interdisciplinary programmes across the University and help build strategic external partnerships. Research environment Psychology at Hull has a strong foundation in core psychological science. The Centre for Psychological Science conducts research in human cognition (theory of mind, social interaction, future thinking, memory, language, attention and learning) and animal behaviour and ecology. This work supports a range of applications in mental health, wellbeing, and neurodiversity, including autism. We seek a colleague who can link this foundational work to applied health research and develop fundable programmes with clear pathways to practice and policy. Applied health research infrastructure The University's Institute for Clinical and Applied Health Research (ICAHR) provides a vibrant interdisciplinary environment with strong external partnerships. The postholder will also benefit from the School's Centre for Addiction and Mental Health Research (CAMHR), established with major NIHR investment. Key infrastructure includes dedicated Patient and Public Involvement support, the Hull Health Trials Unit (HHTU) for study design and delivery, and a Data Safe Haven for secure management of sensitive health data. Areas of interest We welcome applications from across applied health research, particularly in addiction, depression and mental health, or health behaviour change. What we are looking for You will be a research-active psychologist with: A strong publication record and evidence of leadership appropriate to the level of appointment A track record of securing competitive external funding and contributing to (or leading) major bids Experience delivering applied health research with demonstrable pathways to impact A collaborative approach and ability to work with external partners (e.g., NHS, public health, third sector) Commitment to excellent teaching, supervision, mentoring, open research practices, and an inclusive research culture Lecturer/Senior Lecturer/Reader in Psychology
