As an auditor with the Motor Carrier Services Division, you will work with a team of professionals who are dedicated to public service by administering the International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) and International Registration Plan (IRP) for interstate trucking companies registered in Nebraska, while maintaining a customer focused perspective. Motor Carrier Auditors acquire and apply significant knowledge of the IFTA and IRP programs and auditing, while benefiting from a flexible work schedule that provides for a great work/life balance. The audits performed ensure that trucking companies comply with fuel tax and registration regulations and Nebraska statutes. The audit process requires analysis of mileage documentation, fuel transactions, and critical decision- making. Auditors will serve as an auditor in-charge and will have responsibility for directing members of the audit team. Additional responsibilities include acquiring knowledge and becoming familiar with departmental policies, tax laws, and regulations, various accounting systems, and the audit requirements of two international agreements. The auditor will conduct special projects or other work as assigned. This position will be filled at the Auditor level and reviewed later for potential advancement to the Senior Auditor level. Job Duties : The Motor Carrier Service Auditor performs in-the-field and in-office audits of mileage and fuel information for two international agreements as directed by the senior members or Audit Supervisor. Determines the correct fuel tax and registration fees of carriers in the transportation industry. Prepares/completes audit files containing various audit reports and work papers supporting the results of the audit. Conduct special projects assigned by the Audit Supervisor. Works with in-house developed computerized accounting software. Provide testimony in legal hearings. Other duties as assigned and within the scope of the classification. Requirements / Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in business administration or accounting. (See also Legal Requirements). Legal Requirements: Positions in this classification are subject to Title 42, Nebraska Administrative Code, Chapter 1 - Minimum Standards for Government Employees Identified as Auditors. The basic requirement is a Bachelor's degree in business administration or the equivalent, with at least 24 semester hours of accounting or auditing. Any combination of education with a concentration in accounting and auditing experience acceptable to the Auditor of Public Accounts, may be substituted for the educational requirements in Section 002.01. Other : Will be required to sign a confidentiality statement. This position requires travel. As such, the incumbent must be able to present a valid driver's license or another form of reliable transportation. Regular and reliable attendance required.
