Health Physicist

About the role

This position is part of the Office of Environmental Management - Carlsbad Field Office, Department of Energy. As a Health Physicist, you will provide guidance to leadership and contractor management on issues related to health physics, computational software applications, and other areas of safety and health of the workers, public and environment. BASIC REQUIREMENT: You must meet both the Basic Requirement and the Specialized Experience to qualify for this series as described below. See the Education section for the Basic Requirement. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: GS-12: A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level GS-11 in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position is defined as meeting 2 out of 3 of the following: Interpreting and applying radiation protection standards and regulations. Coordinating the safe handling, tracking, packaging, decontamination, and/or disposal of radioactive materials and waste. Performing safety surveys, contamination swipe tests, and ambient radiation dose measurements. GS-13: A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level GS-12 in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position is defined as meeting 2 out of 3 of the following: Planning, implementing, and administering a radiation safety program. Evaluating site or facility-wide activities to identify hazards and regulatory requirements. Modifying existing safety procedures, developing new protocols, and evaluating contractor or program safety analysis reports. GS-14: A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level GS-13 in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position is defined as meeting 2 out of 3 of the following: Leading and conducting site-level evaluations or programmatic audits of contractor or facilities' radiation protection programs. Reviewing, analyzing, and resolving questionable technical issues, safety trends, or non-conforming radiological conditions. Conducting investigations into allegations of potential radiation damage or exposure, and authoring formal technical appraisal reports for senior leadership. "Experience" refers to paid and unpaid experience. Examples of qualifying unpaid experience may include: volunteer work done through National Service programs (such as Peace Corps and AmeriCorps); as well as work for other community-based philanthropic and social organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills; and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
