ROLE OVERVIEW The Director of Safety (DS) is responsible for leading and overseeing all safety and compliance initiatives in high volume eCommerce distribution. This role establishes the strategic direction of the safety function, ensures full compliance with Cal/OSHA and OSHA regulations, and implements best in class programs designed to reduce risk, prevent workplace injuries, and promote a culture of safety accountability.
Responsibilities
- Develop and execute a comprehensive, companywide safety strategy aligned with business objectives.
- Provide full oversight of safety operations in high volume eCommerce facility, ensuring consistent standards, processes, and accountability.
- Lead, mentor, and develop team members to build a high performing safety department.
- Ensure strict compliance with Cal/OSHA, OSHA, and other regulatory agencies, including audit preparation, reporting, corrective action management, and state and federal agency interactions.
- Design, implement, and continuously improve proactive safety programs, including hazard identification, ergonomics, injury prevention, behavioral based safety, and risk reduction initiatives.
- Oversee all incident investigations, ensuring thorough root cause analysis, corrective action implementation, and prevention strategies.
- Partner closely with operations, HR, workers' compensation to manage claims, reduce experience modification rates, and mitigate liability exposure.
- Develop and track key safety performance indicators (KPIs), analyze trends, and present executive level reporting with actionable recommendations.
- Lead site audits, safety inspections, and compliance reviews, ensuring timely remediation of identified risks.
- Drive employee engagement in safety initiatives through training, communication, and leadership visibility.
- Ensure safety training programs are robust, compliant, and scalable to support a large, diverse workforce.
- Maintain accurate documentation and reporting systems to support regulatory requirements and internal governance
- ROLE REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor's degree in occupational health & safety, environmental health & safety, Industrial Hygiene, or related field required. Master's degree preferred.
- 12+ years of progressive safety leadership experience, including multi-site oversight within a distribution, warehouse, manufacturing, or eCommerce environment.
- Demonstrated success implementing safety programs that reduce incident rates and improve compliance outcomes.
- Extensive working knowledge of Cal/OSHA and Federal OSHA regulations, including experience managing audits and regulatory inspections.
- Proven experience leading safety teams in large workforce environments (1,000+ employees; 3,000+ preferred).
- Strong understanding of workers' compensation, experience modification factors, and risk mitigation strategies.
- Experience building safety infrastructure from a strategic level, including policies, SOPs, dashboards, and training programs.
- Professional safety certifications are highly preferred (CSP, CIH, CHST, or equivalent).
- Bilingual English/Spanish strongly preferred.
- Strong analytical, problem solving, and strategic planning skills.
- OSHA certifications are highly desirable.
