About the role

The incumbent serves as a Administrative Support Assistant under the supervision of the Administrative Officer, for the Pathology and Laboratory (P&LM) Service at the VA Central CA, Fresno, CA. Primarily responsible for preparing a wide variety of reports from various data base searches and for the general administrative operation of the service. The incumbent must be able to work independently in establishing priorities, deadlines, and provide structure and organization for multiple programs. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 06/17/2026. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-6 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-5. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment. NOTE: Minimum typing proficiency of 40 words per minute is required GS-6 Grade Requirements: You may qualify based on your experience as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-5 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Knowledge of administrative regulations and operating procedures; Knowledge of person computers for word processing, data storage and retrieval of information and records from data bases contained in internal and external computer program sources; printing and vast knowledge of computer software programs for data management and formulating reports, documents, and correspondence and maintain various departmental records; Ability to prepare reports, documents, and correspondence and maintain various departmental records; Skills in analyzing and summarizing information such as medical records and other documents for use in reports; Knowledge of fund control data sufficient to place supply orders and monitor supply levels; Basic knowledge of Medical Terminology; Knowledge of correct grammar, letter style, format, spelling, syntax; Knowledge of HIPPA rules and regulations regarding information sharing with facilities outside of the VA network; ability to communicate orally and in writing with academic and medical professionals of varying levels for the purpose of relaying or retrieving information; Knowledge of the overall health care systems functional and organization relationships; Familiar with the requirements of the College of American Pathologist and various accreditation agencies to assists laboratory management in maintain continuous readiness. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: The work is primarily sedentary. Typically the employee sits comfortably to do the work. However some walking, bending, carrying of light items (10 lbs) such as papers, books, etc. is required. Use of computer, keyboard and monitor as a primary tool to accomplish the varied functions of this position is required. No special physical demands are required.
