Availity is seeking a Software Engineer III to join our Essentials Platform team. This team owns and operates a suite of over 20 microservices and shared libraries that power our internal Essentials portals, applications, and developer teams across the organization. This role is ideal for an assertive, highly capable engineer who values well-architected systems, pristine engineering practices, and continuous improvement. You will play a key role in designing, building, and operating scalable, resilient backend services while helping the team move leaner, faster, cleaner, and more cost-efficient in the cloud. Our customers are internal development teams, and our success is measured by platform reliability, performance, clarity of system health, and ease of consumption. Location: Remote, US Role qualifications: Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field or equivalent experience 5+ years of professional software engineering experience Strong, hands-on experience with Java, with: Demonstrated ability and willingness to ramp quickly into the other Solid understanding of: Microservices architecture RESTful APIs Distributed systems concepts Experience building and running applications in the cloud ( AWS preferred ) Working knowledge of: CI/CD pipelines Automated testing strategies Source control and trunk-based development Proven ability to: Take ownership of complex systems Make sound technical decisions Balance speed, quality, and long-term maintainability Preferred qualifications (nice-to-have): Experience working with Java in production environments Familiarity with: Docker and containerized workloads Infrastructure as Code (e.g., Terraform) Kubernetes / managed container platforms Strong experience with: Logging, metrics, and distributed tracing Designing for observability and system health awareness Prior experience supporting internal platform or shared services teams Healthcare or regulated industry experience What sets you apart: You have an engineering mindset, not just a coding mindset You care deeply about: Code quality System behavior in production Long-term sustainability You are comfortable being opinionated, while remaining collaborative You are energized by improving systems to be: Faster More reliable Easier to operate Cheaper to run You are not afraid to step into unfamiliar technology and learn it deeply
