Job Description: Position Purpose summary: The Thrift Store Clerk provides service to customers, sort incoming product and assists in the ongoing retail operations of The Salvation Army Hanover Thrift Store. Accountabilities: Operations: Protect the integrity of all donated items. Process raw materials by loading/unloading, sorting, packing, storing, loading and baling donations. Interact with customers/donors in a positive, friendly and courteous manner. Contribute to meeting store sales targets; provide efficient courteous customer service; use tact and courtesy when dealing with difficult donors/customers. Possess knowledge of stock prices and featured sale products in order to respond to customer enquiries. Assist donors with their donations, unload donations, and place stock in appropriate warehouse locations. Select donations for store distribution meeting established standards of quality and distinguishing between discarded/recycled and good quality merchandise according to company standards; ensure that all products are priced correctly as per store policy. Replenish inventory levels, i.e. hang clothing and restocking of merchandise as directed Pay attention to store security, by monitoring activity within the store. Categorize and box seasonal clothing, housewares, shoes etc. for storing. Abide by store policy and procedures. Work with volunteers as assigned. Communications Inform your supervisor of all customer complaints, comments and concerns regarding customer service, prices, merchandise, etc. Health and Safety: Contribute to the safety of staff and customers (e.g., snow removal, clear fire exits, cleans spillage). Maintain an attractive organized appearance of the store, tidy up and restock shelves, clean, sweep, dust, and mop as necessary. Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army's health and safety policies and procedures. Perform other related duties. Critical Relationship Management: Internal relationships: Corps Officers, volunteers, staff External relationships: Community MANAGERIAL/Technical Leadership RESPONSIBILITY : This position reports directly to the Thrift Store Manager or designate. FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT: Responsible for accurate completion of customer transactions including handling cash and debit sales. Contribute to store budgets by maintaining customer service standards. Assist with the materials management of donations/product flow in the thrift store. Working Conditions: This is a temporary full-time position based on 35 hours per week. Schedule may vary from week to week and include weekdays and Saturday's. Flexibility in scheduling is required. Mandatory requirement for steel-toe safety boots or shoes. Universal precautions; safety gloves. Ability to stand for long periods with frequent twisting, bending, crouching and reaching is required. Ability to lift/move 40 pounds. Hours Of Work: Work will be scheduled as per the Thrift Store operational requirements between work hours of Tuesday to Saturday between 9:00am to 4:30pm with a ½ hour unpaid meal break where applicable. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Submit as required a Police Record Check that is acceptable to The Salvation Army in its sole discretion.
