About the role
Merton College proposes to appoint a Stipendiary Lecturer in Applied Mathematics for the period 1 October 2026 until 30 September 2027. The main duties of the post will be: to teach undergraduates reading Mathematics for up to six hours per week in full term, to share in the organisational responsibility and administration of Mathematics and Joint Degrees with Mathematics in the College, to act as Director of Studies for a number of students studying Mathematics, and to provide study skills and pastoral support. The successful candidate will be required to teach first-year (Prelims) Probability, Introductory Calculus, Fourier Series and PDEs, Multivariable Calculus and Part A (second-year) Differential Equations 1. Depending on student choices, teaching or organisation of teaching may also be required for first-year (Prelims) Computational Mathematics and Part A (second-year) Integral Transforms, Fluids and Waves, Mathematical Modelling in Biology, Differential Equations 2, Numerical Analysis, Calculus of Variations. Candidates should be undertaking a doctorate in Mathematics and should have the ability to be an effective and inspiring teacher of Mathematics including in understanding and responding to the learning needs of undergraduates of high ability in a tutorial (small group) system.
