About the role

We are seeking a highly experienced Tax Director to lead our Private Foundation and Tax-Exempt Organizations practice. This role requires deep technical expertise in the unique compliance, regulatory, and planning needs of large private foundations and other exempt entities. You will serve as a strategic advisor to sophisticated clients navigating complex federal excise tax rules, grant-making compliance, and investment income taxation. The ideal candidate will bring the technical rigor and research capabilities expected of a Big Four or large regional firm, combined with the client relationship skills to serve as a trusted partner to foundation leadership and family office clients.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as day-to-day client contact and trusted advisor for a portfolio of large private foundations and related exempt entities
  • Lead the preparation, review, and filing of complex Forms 990-PF (Return of Private Foundation), Form 990 (for public charities), and Form 990-T (Exempt Organization Business Income Tax Return), along with multi-state reporting requirements
  • Manage client engagement timelines, staff assignments, and quality control review processes
  • Provide proactive guidance on Chapter 42 provisions, with particular emphasis on identifying and preventing self-dealing transactions between foundations and disqualified persons
  • Advise on taxable expenditure rules, including expenditure responsibility requirements for grants to non-public charities and foreign organizations
  • Monitor and counsel clients on excess business holdings, jeopardy investments, and related penalty excise tax exposure
  • Analyze complex investment portfolios-including hedge funds and private equity fund K-1s, as well as other alternative investments-to calculate UBTI and identify debt-financed income issues
  • Advise on UBTI siloing rules and optimize allocation of net operating losses across separate trades or businesses
  • Manage calculation and monitoring of the annual 5% minimum distribution requirement (distributable amount) to ensure timely qualifying distributions
  • Advise on grant timing strategies, set-aside elections, and program-related investments to optimize philanthropic impact while maintaining compliance
  • Research and advise on foundation formation, termination, and conversion strategies
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory developments affecting tax-exempt organizations and communicate impacts to clients and internal teams
  • Supervise, mentor, and develop tax staff and seniors; and provide ongoing technical training
  • Collaborate with colleagues on estate planning and integrated income tax planning opportunities
  • Opportunity to coordinate with wealth advisors around the US to support their service delivery to clients with Private Foundations or other meaningful philanthropic intentions
  • Qualifications & Requirements
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • Licensure: Active CPA license or J.D. required
  • Experience: Minimum 8+ years of progressive tax experience with substantial focus on Tax-Exempt Organizations, preferably at a Big Four firm, large regional CPA firm, or law firm with a national exempt organizations practice
  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain complex tax concepts to non-tax professionals, foundation boards, and family members
