About the role

A Standardized Patient (SP) is an individual who is carefully trained to portray or simulate all aspects of a real patient as part of a case scenario in order to provide an opportunity for a student to learn or be evaluated on their clinical skills. SPs learn all aspects of a patient portrayal including the patient's appearance, demeanor, chief complaint, symptoms, past medical history, family history, and physical findings. An SP is carefully trained to not only simulate a real patient in a scenario but also provides feedback to the students, especially in regard to their communication and interpersonal skills. The purpose of using SPs is to give the students the opportunity to practice the communication, diagnostic, and examination skills in a clinical and safe environment which they will need before they begin their professional careers. Primary Responsibilities Attends and participates in training activities in preparation to portray patient roles in staged settings. Based on specific case studies, repeatedly portrays a patient consistently and accurately throughout staged medical encounters including, but not limited to the patient interview, physical or other non-invasive procedures as deemed necessary by the case. Observe and document learner roles based on case requirements. Evaluate the learner's verbal and non-verbal communication skills. Communicates availability for work, reports for work when scheduled.   • Appropriate experience may be substituted for education on an equivalent basis.
  • Minimum Required Education: High school diploma
  • Physical Requirements
  • Work requires occasionally lifting moderate weight materials, standing, or walking continuously.
  • Work Environment
  • Occasional exposure to dust, noise, temperature changes, or contact with water or other liquids. Work is performed in an environmentally controlled environment.
  • Sensory Acuity
  • Ability to detect and translate speech or other communication required. May occasionally require the ability to distinguish colors and perceive relative distances between objects.
