Job Description Summary & Additional Information Organization's Summary Statement: The Department of Philosophy at the University of Maryland, College Park, is a vibrant and research-active department with strengths across many areas of philosophy, including ethics, philosophy of mind, philosophy of language, political philosophy, metaphysics, ancient philosophy, logic, philosophy of artificial intelligence, and decision theory. The department offers undergraduate and graduate programs in Philosophy, supports the Philosophy, Politics, and Economics major, and contributes substantially to the university's new BA in Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence. Our faculty and students pursue philosophical questions with rigor, creativity, and attention to their significance for human life, public reason, science, technology, and society. The Department of Philosophy at the University of Maryland, College Park, invites applications for a full-time professional-track faculty position as a Lecturer in Philosophy. The successful candidate will teach six courses per academic year at the undergraduate level. Most courses will be in Ethics, though teaching competencies in Logic and Decision Theory are also welcome. In addition to teaching, responsibilities include support for undergraduate recruitment and outreach, including assisting the Director of Undergraduate Studies, the Director of the Philosophy, Politics, and Economics major, and the Director of the future Human-Centered AI major in attending recruiting events. We seek candidates whose teaching and service have prepared them to contribute to the four pillars of the ARHU Strategic Plan: Transformative Thinking; Boundless Creativity; Expansive Empathy; and Meaningful Futures. Contributions toward those goals and values might include leadership in teaching, mentoring, or service toward building an equitable and inclusive scholarly environment and/or increasing access or participation of all individuals equitably and fairly. Lecturers who teach three or more courses over a year are benefits-eligible. The load for full salary is six courses per year plus the responsibilities outlined above. This search is contingent upon the availability of funds.
