Job Summary Postgraduate year one (PGY1) pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the ASHP educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy, and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies. PGY2 residency programs build on PGY1 residency programs to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives for advanced practice areas. PGY2 residents function independently as practitioners with greater competence and proficiency as compared to PGY1 residents. At completion of the PGY2 residency, the pharmacist is prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification. Collect, assess, and analyze clinical information. Develop and implement evidence-based, cost effective and comprehensive patient-centered care plans. Monitor, evaluate, and modify care plans. Identify and address medication-related needs of patients experiencing care transitions. Collaborate and communicate with the healthcare team. Communicate effectively with patients and caregivers. Document patient care activities. Promote safe and effective access to medication therapy by facilitating formulary management or medication access, participating in medication event reporting, and managing the process for preparing, dispensing and administering medications. Identify and implement population health management through delivering/enhancing a population health service, program, or process. Prepare/revise a drug class review, monograph, treatment guideline, treatment protocol, utilization management criteria, and/or order set. Conduct practice advancement projects. Identify the topic, develop and implement a project plan, analyze the results, assess potential changes, and develop and and present a final report. Demonstrate leadership skills that contribute to departmental or organizational excellence in the advancement of pharmacy services and that foster personal growth and professional engagement. Provide effective medication and practice-related education. Construct educational activities, create written communication, demonstrate appropriate verbal communication, and assess effectiveness of educational activities. Employ preceptor roles. All other duties as assigned. Additional Requirements Required : Education - Bachelors in Pharmacy Certification - Pharmacist - South Dakota Board of Pharmacy Pharmacist Licensure PGY1 and PGY2 residents must sit for the pharmacist licensing exams (NAPLEX & MPJE) by August 1. If South Dakota licensure does not occur within 120 days after program start date, the resident will be dismissed from the program unless an exception is made and documented by the Residency Program Director and Residency Advisory Committee. If an exception is made for licensure past 120 days after the program start date, the residency year may be extended for up to three months to ensure two-thirds of the residency year is completed as a licensed pharmacist. A written residency completion plan will be developed. If the resident is not licensed as a pharmacist by the end of the extension, the resident will be dismissed from the program.
