About This Position Under general supervision, this position assists in general administrative or research functions to develop a working knowledge of a targeted area in municipal government related to benchmarked professional positions, performing advanced internship duties. This rotation is designed to introduce the resident to the role of public health in assuring the health of refugees resettling in the United States. Goals: 1. Understand the common and unique health issues of refugees. 2. Understand the medical approach to screening and treatment of refugees as outlined by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. 3. Appreciate the multi-team approach needed to treat refugees from different countries and different cultural backgrounds. Job Description: Duties, Functions, and Responsibilities: Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned. Provide comprehensive refugee medical care : conduct exams, immunizations, diagnosis, treatment, follow-up, and preventive counseling for acute and chronic conditions. Apply refugee health screening guidelines : understand and use U.S. and overseas screening processes, vaccination programs, and treatment guidelines (e.g., TB, malaria, intestinal parasites). Support refugee transition and assimilation : assist families with navigation of U.S. health systems and requirements (e.g., school immunizations). Demonstrate professionalism and cultural humility : show compassion, integrity, respect for privacy/autonomy, and responsiveness to cultural and social diversity. Communicate and collaborate effectively : work with refugee patients, families, public health teams, and maintain accurate, timely medical records. Engage in systems-based and practice-based learning : participate in clinic meetings, incorporate feedback, use evidence-based resources, and understand healthcare systems, costs, and public health infrastructure (e.g., TB clinics).
