The primary purpose of this position is to serve as the operator responsible for operating and maintaining power support systems. This includes managing high-voltage generators located in the Central Utility Plant (CUP), which currently has a total output of 19.15 megawatts. In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-5300 Industrial Equipment Maintenance Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the work of a POWERED SUPPORT SYSTEMS MECHANIC without more than normal supervision. JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1.Knowledge of principles of (AC/DC) theory, solid state circuitry, and safety rules and regulations pertaining to powered support systems; and the operation of emergency generator power systems. Knowledge in low, medium and high voltage. Skill in troubleshooting complex situations related to electrical power generators. 2. Knowledge of safety regulations, practices, and procedures; environmental standards and requirements; and regulations, procedures, and policies related to records maintenance and documentation. 3. Skill in reading, interpreting, and using wiring diagrams, schematic drawings, technical orders, technical publications, and similar guides. 4. Skill in using hand and power tools, instruments, test equipment, and electrical meters to include special tools such as hydraulic knock-out tools, hammers, drills, valve spring compressors, and micrometers; and installing, operating, inspecting, maintaining, repairing, and modifying generators, automatic transfer switches, and uninterruptible power systems. 5. Ability to apply shop procedures, policies, written and oral instructions, and directives sufficient to provide training to others. Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing with a variety of personnel. 6.Knowledge of quality assurance practices and procedures to monitor contractor performed work. Ability to evaluate civil engineering emergencies that may occur and determine the appropriate course of action. PHYSICAL EFFORT: The work involves frequent bending, reaching, crouching, standing, and arm movement. Sometimes must work in awkward positions or cramped areas. The employee is required to lift and carry items weighing up to about 40 pounds and lift heavier items using jacks, hoists, or helpers. WORKING CONDITIONS: May work inside and outside. Inside work involves frequent exposure to drafts, fluctuating temperatures, and loud noises. Outside work may require dealing with adverse weather conditions, such as rain, snow, or slippery, icy surfaces. In both settings, employees are frequently exposed to various irritants or discomfort from dust, heat, fumes, and hard, damp floors or surfaces. The incumbent may work on parts that are dirty, greasy parts and systems that may pose risks due to defects, leading to potential hazards. Incumbent is frequently exposed to the possibilities of receiving of cuts, burns, bruises, strains, and electrical shocks while repairing, positioning, adjusting, and moving equipment. Additionally, there is a possibility of burns and skin irritation from handling acids, fluids, and lubricants. To reduce the dangers and irritations, the incumbent must adhere to numerous safety procedures and wear protective equipment. This includes safety glasses, ear protection, hard hats, steel-toed shoes, respirators, gloves, and appropriate clothing. Some of these safety gears may be uncomfortable to wear for extended periods. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
