Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in a Product Design or Engineering related discipline, with a good understanding of design for manufacture and manufacturing techniques.
  • Relevant experience in a design engineering role, ideally in the consumer goods business, supporting multi component packaging or device design within a corporate or agency environment.
  • Strong 3D CAD design skills with expertise in parametric solid and/or surface modelling; with good data management and version control. (We use NX, but experience in Solidworks, CREO etc would be welcome).

  • Some experience of Finite Element tools (Abaqus). IM Simulation experience would also be advantageous.
  • We would be looking for a candidate with 5-7+ years experience as a designer in either an in-house design team or consultancy
  • Knowledge of moulded plastic packaging components, material properties, processing and manufacturing an advantage.

We are looking for a Packaging Product Designer to join the team in Leeds, UK. JOB PURPOSE As a Packaging Product Designer in Deodorants you will work across multiple innovation and capability projects reflecting our packaging and future technology strategies, to deliver brilliant and meaningful products that consumers love, whilst shaping our sustainable future. You will support projects within cross functional teams and be responsible for engineering future packaging projects, new technologies and novel future formats, turning technically feasible concepts into mass manufacturable products. By connecting functions, touchpoints, competencies and external partners, you will have significant technical impact on our packaging portfolio. In order to deliver the greatest value for both the consumer and our brands, your job is to deliver design rigour and ensure that the brand's design intent is met in a project's outcome. Main Responsibilities Lead packaging engineering design work for key innovation projects from concept to manufacture, using Unilever best practice and design tools and methodologies. Partner with internal and external teams to create engineering solutions to deliver the Brand / R&D ambitions. Generate and refine structural packaging solutions using engineering tools (CAD, simulation, prototyping & testing) to develop and validate with rigour and speed. Use 3D printing and prototyping technologies to bring design ideas to life and enable the technical testing of new ideas and solutions. Support packaging workstream leaders in the technical development of components, gathering and interpreting quantitative data and insights to aid decision making. Support the briefing process, collaborating and guiding the design delivery of external engineering and simulation agencies. Create and manage CAD data in support of projects, creating detailed component designs, 2D drawings and robust component specifications, under guidance from senior engineers and packaging work-stream leaders. Liaise with global suppliers and development partners to provide information, within strict data version control guidelines. Support the design capability build programme - delivering engineering tools, processes and simulation capabilities used to ensure new packaging is landed in the market right first time. Regularly contribute to cross category Design Communities of Practice in areas of specialist expertise.
