Staff Accountant As an accountant at General Matter, you will operate at the intersection of hands-on execution and systems design. You will support core accounting processes while helping build the infrastructure, controls, and systems required to support long-term scale. This role requires comfort with ambiguity, strong execution, and the ability to partner closely with technical and operational teams. You will work directly with leadership, engineering, operations, and external advisors as the company transitions from early-stage operations to a fully integrated industrial enterprise.
Responsibilities
- Support core accounting operations, including monthly close, journal entries, accruals, and account reconciliations.
- Design and implement scalable accounting processes, policies, and documentation.
- Build and manage the accrual process to ensure accurate and timely expense recognition.
- Review open purchase orders and partner with operations and procurement to ensure proper tracking and closure.
- Support preparation of internal financial reporting, dashboards, reconciliations, and other schedules that inform decision-making.
- Conduct accounting analyses to ensure transactions are recorded in accordance with US GAAP and company policy.
- Develop and implement internal controls appropriate for a regulated, advanced manufacturing environment.
- Partner cross-functionally to improve financial visibility, budgeting inputs, and operational alignment.
- Track fixed assets across purchase orders and related components, monitor assets placed in service, and support capitalization and depreciation processes.
- Provide support for audits, ad hoc analyses, and special projects as needed.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field.
- 3+ years of progressive accounting experience.
- Strong knowledge in US GAAP with a mix of technical and operational accounting experience.
- CPA, active or inactive.
- Preferred Skills and Experience
- Strong Excel skills and experience working with ERP systems; QuickBooks experience is a plus.
- Experience building or improving accounting processes in a high-growth or early-stage environment.
- Exceptional analytical skills and experience working with complex or large data sets.
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment.
- Comfort operating at both a detailed execution level and a strategic level.
- Experience in advanced manufacturing, energy, industrial, or technology-driven companies.
- Additional Requirements
- Willing to work extended hours and weekends as needed.
- This position is based in Los Angeles, CA and requires being onsite full-time - hybrid and remote work will not be considered.

- The base salary range for this role is $85,000-$145,000 annually.
