Compensation Range $29.30 - $38.10 -- Job Description Summary Operate heavy construction equipment and/or tractor-trailer. This position can be assigned to any division as needed in Public Works. The ideal candidate will have a Class A CDL with a clean driving record and equipment / driving experience. -- Job Description Field Work - 80% Operate tractor-trailer, heavy and light construction, or road maintenance equipment. Incumbent may have some lead worker responsibilities. Advanced level of heavy equipment operations. Must be able to perform work without direction or immediate supervision and follow detailed instruction to aid in the efficient and effective completion of the project or assigned task. Must perform work in a courteous and safe manner. Must be able to effectively communicate verbally through radio. When contact with the public is required, the employee must maintain a courteous, helpful attitude. Must be able to follow instructions from senior employees. Administration - 10% Must have basic computer skills and the ability to report/record data as per departmental requirements. Ability to write, read and comprehend single instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other County employees and the public. Other Duties as Assigned - 10% Must be available to respond to and work extraordinary hours during emergency events. Additional overtime duties may be required. Assist with snow and other inclement weather operations. Percentages of time in the above job duty categories may fluctuate. -- Required Qualifications Required Education High School Experience Qualifications 2 years experience as an equipment operator with working knowledge of tools and light and heavy equipment necessary for maintenance activities used in servicing county roads. Preferred Education High school diploma/GED Skills and Abilities Must have a demonstrated proficiency in any two of the following pieces of equipment: tracked hydraulic excavator, snowplow, bulldozer, truck tractor with belly dump, front end loader, lowboy trailer, scraper, aggregate crushing plant, tandem axle truck, tanker, asphalt paver, backhoe (smaller than a John Deere 510), compaction equipment, skid steer, and motor grader. Must have a basic familiarity with and experience working with a variety of road construction, maintenance and repair equipment and materials. Must be able to read and speak the English language sufficiently to converse with the general public, to respond to official inquiries, and to make entries on reports and records. Must effectively present information in one-on-one situation with the public, subordinates, and supervisors. Add and subtract two-digit numbers and multiply/divide with 10's and 100's. Perform these operations using units of money, weight, measurement, volume and distance. Apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions and make appropriate day to day decisions without supervisory guidance to perform assigned tasks. Must be able to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. Candidate must pass a background check prior to employment start date. Candidate must pass a substance use screening prior to employment start date. This position will participate in random substance use screening. Candidate must pass a physical demands evaluation post offer screen compatible to this position. Candidate must pass criminal background check prior to employment start date. Licenses and Certifications Valid Colorado Class A CDL license with tanker endorsement required or ability to obtain license within specified time frame agreed upon hire. Ability to be MSHA certified. Pre-employment substance screening is required for this position. This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening. Employment is contingent upon successfully passing the screening in accordance with Weld County policy.
