JOB ANNOUNCEMENT - Research Scientist in Pharmacology (Post-doctoral) Title of research project and CODE: Novel Therapeutic Strategies for Alzheimer's Disease, "EXCELLENCE/0925/0289" Organisation Unit: European University Cyprus Research Centre (EUC RC), School of Science, Department of Health Sciences Duration of appointment: 24 months Job Title: Postdoctoral Researcher in Pharmacology EUC Representative: Dr. Athanasios Metaxas Date: 30/06/2026 Background: Our research project investigates novel therapeutic strategies for Alzheimer's disease, by exploring the role of the serotonergic system in disease progression. Using advanced molecular, histological and behavioural approaches in established preclinical models, the project aims to investigate the relationship between serotonergic signalling, cognitive and behavioural outcomes, neuroinflammation, and Alzheimer's disease-related neuropathology. The successful candidate will join an international multidisciplinary research consortium working at the forefront of Alzheimer's disease research. The OBJECTIVES of this EXCELLENCE project are: To investigate the role of the serotonergic system in the pathogenesis and progression of Alzheimer's disease. To evaluate the effects of novel therapeutic interventions on cognitive performance, behavioural outcomes, neuroinflammation and Alzheimer's disease-related neuropathology in preclinical models. To generate robust preclinical evidence supporting the development of innovative disease-modifying therapies for Alzheimer's disease. Overall Purpose of the Job: The employee will be responsible for: Preparing and processing biological tissue samples, including tissue sectioning for histological and autoradiographic analyses. Performing immunohistochemistry, receptor autoradiography and related laboratory techniques in accordance with established protocols. Acquiring, processing and quantitatively analysing histological and autoradiographic images using appropriate image analysis software. Contributing to the design, execution, analysis and interpretation of preclinical research experiments. Assisting with behavioural studies in rodent models of Alzheimer's disease, where required. Maintaining accurate laboratory records and ensuring compliance with laboratory quality, safety and ethical standards. Preparing scientific reports, manuscripts and conference presentations, and contributing to the dissemination of project results. Working collaboratively with project partners and supporting the successful delivery of project milestones and deliverables. Required qualifications Ph.D. in Neuroscience, Pharmacology, Biomedical Sciences, Biology, or another relevant life sciences discipline. Demonstrated hands-on experience in tissue sectioning and immunohistochemistry. Experience in receptor autoradiography or related radioligand-based techniques is desirable; however, training will be provided to the successful candidate. Experience in quantitative image analysis using software such as ImageJ/Fiji or equivalent. A strong publication record in peer-reviewed scientific journals, commensurate with career stage. Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a multidisciplinary research team. Experience with behavioural pharmacology and behavioural testing in rodents is considered an advantage but is not essential. The successful candidate will work closely with Dr. Athanasios Metaxas, who will be directly responsible for the day-to-day management leads and will ensure that all milestones and deliverables are met on time and to target.
