The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene's Division of Environmental Health works to prevent and control illness and injury related to environmental and occupational health risks through outreach, education, surveillance, and enforcement. With staff of 1,000, the Division's responsibilities are broad, including oversight of environmental investigations, lead poisoning, injury prevention, occupational health, food safety, childcare, radiation control, recreational and drinking water quality, air quality, climate health, vector control, veterinary public health and pest control. The Bureau of Veterinary and Pest Control services' mission is to promote and protect the health of New York City residents and visitors by ensuring an environment free from animal-borne diseases, hazards and nuisances by controlling and regulating animals. VPCS is also responsible for conducting activities to detect the presence of vector-borne disease pathogens and prevent transmission to humans and other hosts with a focus on mosquito control and West Nile Virus prevention. We're looking for a mission-driven professional to help strengthen bureau operations, advance public health priorities, and support a high-performing, equity-focused workforce. The Division of Environmental Health seeks a Director of Administration for its Bureau of Veterinary and Pest Control Services. Duties will include but not be limited to: Oversee daily operations, streamline processes, and ensure timely responses to emerging public health issues. Coordinate, plan, develop, and implement initiatives that improve VPCS efficiency and service delivery. Respond to internal/external information requests; route inquiries appropriately while maintaining strong communication across divisions, city agencies, and external partners. Perform job analyses and evaluate worker safety and environmental programs across bureau facilities and field sites. Provide leadership with budget impact insights and develop evidence-based compensation and workforce equity recommendations. Coordinate with the Division's administration, Finance, and HR; support strategic planning and bureau wide alignment. Lead planning for meetings, training, team building activities, and ongoing health and safety training. Prepare reports and digital/print materials for internal and external audiences; ensure timely dissemination of management reports. Track headcount and coordinate the bureau's performance evaluation cycle to ensure timely submissions. Ensure all staff maintain required licenses and credentials. Draft standard operating procedures and assist with corrective actions. Manage a team handling VPCS staffing requests, purchasing, contracting, OMB inquiries, and priority bureau events. PREFERRED SKILLS: Experience hiring and managing specific titles including public health sanitarian and exterminator. Experience in Public Health Administration with fiscal and human resources management. Ability to manage multiple priorities and competing demands in high-paced environment while maintaining professionalism. Ability to work collaboratively across multiple teams to meet a shared goal. Strong communication, organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Why you should work for us?
