About the role
Reporting to the Assistant Vice President (AVP), Accounting Advisory, the Director, Accounting Advisory is responsible for supporting and developing SLF's accounting policies and financial reporting under International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). The incumbent will participate in the implementation of new accounting standards, researching the accounting implications of business initiatives and other transactions, the review of corporate financial statements and notes, and participate in other projects as required.
Responsibilities
- Work closely with the AVP and partner with business groups to provide advice on the accounting implications of business initiatives and other transactions throughout the organization
- Experience with IFRS is preferred.
- Implement new financial reporting standards as required by IFRS
- Assess impacts on financial reporting processes and internal controls as well as changes to business metrics resulting from new accounting standards
- Prepare and review technical accounting memos on transactions and initiatives, as well as existing applications of IFRS in light of evolving industry practices and benchmarking
- Communicate new accounting standards and external developments in IFRS, including delivering presentations in regular company-wide IFRS education programs
- Review financial statements and notes for the quarterly and annual financial statements required for external reporting
- Coach managers within the team

- Accounting designation is required (CPA, CA, CMA or CGA)
- Experience in accounting advisory and an in-depth knowledge of IFRS
- Knowledge of the insurance industry would be an asset
- Strong problem solving, analytical and conceptual skills; can see the "big picture" in a complex environment
- Strong writing and presentation skills in order to present findings/results and recommendations to target audience in a concise manner
- Strong people, process and project leadership skills
- Excellent verbal communication skills - one-on-one and small groups. Ability to deal with conflicts, influencing skills necessary to be able to communicate recommendations and obtain cooperation across functional groups to achieve objectives
- Ability to manage changing priorities; excellent organizational and project management skills
- Self-starter, with accuracy and attention to detail, works well in a team as well as with minimal supervision
