About the role

The MEng Engineering and Architectural Design is a multidisciplinary course aiming to provide students with a robust knowledge and experience of architectural, environmental and structural design and engineering in buildings, placing creativity and design at the centre of engineering education. The four-year programme which has been jointly designed and delivered by The Bartlett School of Architecture (BSA), UCL Institute for Environmental Design and Engineering (IEDE) and UCL Civil Environmental and Geomatic Engineering (CEGE) in close collaboration with industry leaders to combine the major disciplines of architecture and engineering of the built environment and prepare graduates to be future industry lead. The role of Environmental Design Tutor sits within the Institute of Environmental Design and Engineering, itself part of the Bartlett School of Energy, Environment and Resources. Environmental Design Tutor's work with fellow tutors from structural engineering and architecture to deliver high quality, design studio based teaching to Year 3 and Year 4 students within vertical units. The post holder will prepare and deliver appropriate teaching material, including regular tutorials and seminars, as part of the delivery of the relevant module requirements. Detailed duties and responsibilities in Teaching, Research, Enabling and Essential Criteria and Timings will include: Teaching Delivering high quality teaching across designated design modules Development and delivery of relevant teaching material, and where relevant, compliant with current CIBSE and wider programme accreditation requirements Facilitating knowledge transfer and promotion of new ideas in specialist areas for the built environment Preparation of tutorials, briefs and associated teaching materials Setting and marking of assignments Administration (record keeping, student feedback, etc.) Attendance at portfolio reviews, assessment panels and examination boards Delivering high quality tutorial teaching across designated design modules Fostering and promoting a healthy and collaborative studio culture working with colleagues in BSA (Bartlett School of Architecture) & CEGE (Civil, Environmental & Geomatic Engineering) Any additional commitments as agreed between the course director & module coordinators and tutors Enabling Liaise with Programme Directors and Module Coordinators (Design Practice 1, 2 and 3) to actively contribute to programme development, student experience, and module examination, including programme meetings, cross unit crits, interim reviews, field trip activity, summer show preparation, and programme/school induction (record keeping, student attendance, feedback). Attending relevant IEDE and UCL training as required For Design Practice 2 & 3 Term 1, 2 + 3 Thursdays for group and 1:1 design tutorials, with a greater time commitment before the key submissions to be agreed with module lead & Programme Director One Monday AM or Wednesdays AM per academic year for SEADS (Structural Environmental Architectural Design Skills) Classes Marking and assessment takes place over Term 1, 2 & 3 Enabling and preparatory work to take place outside these times to meet the deadlines The post is available from 01 September 2026.
