About the role
We are seeking a Legal Specialist to join our Self-Insured Business Unit. In this role, you will leverage your legal expertise and workers compensation knowledge to strategically manage and resolve claims involving litigation. You will play a key role in: Managing common law claims, including matters where workers have elected to pursue damages, in consultation with external legal panel firms Overseeing disputed statutory claims through WorkCover WA dispute resolution process, including conciliation and arbitration Managing other legally complex claims Undertaking legal project work Providing expert legal guidance and support to EML's Self- Insured claims teams and policy holders Reporting to the Legal Manager, you will contribute to achieving EML's performance targets and organisational objectives while delivering a high standard of service to stakeholders. Responsibilities
- Provide timely, accurate legal advice to support the claims team on legislative, regulatory and policy matters relating to workers' compensation, enabling sound, evidence-based decision making.
- Partner closely with external legal panel providers to ensure high-quality advice and the development of effective litigation strategies that achieve optimal outcomes.
- Represent EML in legal proceedings alongside external legal representatives.
- Contribute to strategic portfolio reviews, including presenting to employers on key legal principles and individual claim matters where required.
- Monitor and interpret emerging case law and precedents impacting claims management, ensuring insights are embedded into practice.
- ABOUT YOU
- Either hold a legal qualification or bring strong relevant industry experience
- Demonstrated in-depth knowledge of workers' compensation legislation and associated regulations
- Experience working within a legal, insurer, regulatory, or self-insurance environment in a fast-paced setting
- Strong experience in legal drafting, including preparation of notices, submissions, and related documentation
- Excellent communication, stakeholder engagement, and analytical skills, with the ability to interpret and report on performance data
