The City of Ventura has an exciting opportunity to join our Police Department as a Police Services Officer/Senior Police Services Officer . This non-sworn position plays a critical role in supporting public safety operations by providing a wide range of technical, administrative, and customer service functions. Working in a team-oriented environment, you will assist with law enforcement support activities, public inquiries, report preparation, program coordination, records and evidence management, offender registration, parking enforcement, training coordination, and other specialized assignments. Depending on assignment, you may also support crime prevention programs, volunteer coordination, background investigations, traffic operations, court liaison activities, animal control services, and body-worn camera and digital evidence programs, helping ensure the efficient and effective delivery of police services to the community . This position is flexibly staffed and may be filled at either level, depending on the qualifications, experience, and demonstrated skills of the incumbent, as well as the staffing needs of the City. Key responsibilities include: Providing customer service and police-related information to the public, both in person and over the phone. Preparing reports, maintaining records, and supporting law enforcement operations through administrative and technical assignments. Coordinating programs and specialized activities related to crime prevention, volunteers, training, traffic, property and evidence, offender registration, or other assigned areas. Collecting, reviewing, and processing information to support investigations, case management, and departmental operations. Responding to inquiries, resolving issues, and serving as a liaison between the Police Department, community members, and partner agencies. Utilizing a variety of software systems to manage records, track information, and support daily operations. Assisting with special projects and program coordination to support the efficient delivery of police services. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS Police Services Officer: This is the entry-level class in the flexibly allocated Police Services Officer series. This class is distinguished from the Senior Police Services Officer classification by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within this series. This class is typically used as a training class where incumbents follow established procedures and guidelines, working under immediate supervision while learning job tasks. Senior Police Services Officer: This is the journey-level job classification in the flexibly allocated Police Services Officer series. This classification is distinguished from the lower classification by the assignment of the full range of duties and higher level of responsibility associated with the more complex nature of the duties assigned. Employees at this level are required to be fully trained in all procedures related to their assigned area of responsibility, performing the most complex police services and acting as back-up to other areas of assignment, as necessary. Receives direction from an assigned supervisor and may exercise technical and functional supervision over assigned police services officers and/or cadets, volunteer personnel and parking enforcement personnel. The Ideal Candidate - Preferred Qualifications Responds diplomatically and tactfully to people of diverse backgrounds, often in adverse situations. Diffuses situations that involve persons who are confrontational, irate, confused, or frustrated. Is skilled at planning, coordinating, and directing special events or activities. Is familiar with crime prevention and volunteer programs. Has excellent computer and report-writing skills, and experience interpreting complex policies and procedures. Has experience as support for law enforcement. Works independently, with minimum supervision. Minimum Qualifications - Required Police Services Officer : A combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade and some experience working with the public.
