Senior Product Designer

About the role

Your job is to design experiences where AI agents do the heavy lifting, but humans stay in control of what matters. That means working at the frontier: designing for trust, exception handling, explainability, and graceful failure - not just happy-path flows. You'll work closely with engineers and PMs to define what agents can and should do, and with the broader design team to ensure the patterns you create raise the bar across SmartStream's product suite. Own the end-to-end design of AI-agent interactions: how agents communicate intent, handle uncertainty, request input, and hand back to humans at the right moment Design for non-deterministic behaviour - defining how the system behaves when outcomes aren't guaranteed and how users build appropriate trust over time Create mental models and interaction patterns that make complex agent behaviour legible to non-technical financial operations users Define what 'done' looks like in agentic workflows where the agent, not the user, is driving execution Identify user problems worth solving through agent-based approaches, not just design solutions for pre-defined problems Conduct generative and evaluative research independently to ground design decisions in real financial operations contexts Translate complex domain knowledge (reconciliation, transaction matching, exception management) into clear design decisions Define reusable design patterns for agent transparency, progressive disclosure of AI reasoning, and human-in-the-loop controls - patterns that don't yet exist in our design system Contribute to the evolution of our design system to support AI-native product surfaces Document design decisions and rationale in ways that create shared understanding across engineering and product Drive continuous improvement Identify and raise UX issues proactively, not just responding to what's assigned Suggest process improvements and new ways of working Stay current with design trends and bring fresh thinking to the team You'll work primarily with the reconciliation product team, collaborating closely with the Product Manager and engineering team SmartStream works with complex workflows you'll need to learn this domain deeply Mentor mid-level and junior designers through critique, pair designing, and pattern articulation Help establish a high craft bar across the team - you lead by example, not by title Craft & domain depth- Design for AI-native interactions: trust, explainability, human-in-the-loop controls, and failure states. This is the most critical gap given the role. Research & discovery- Conduct independent generative and evaluative research to ground decisions in real user context, without waiting for a brief. Strategy & business alignment- Connect design decisions to business outcomes and articulate the "why" clearly to senior stakeholders. Systems thinking- Identify edge cases, failure modes, and downstream implications before they become engineering problems. Communication of design decisions- Document rationale in ways that create shared understanding across engineering, product, and leadership - especially important given the maturing PM context. Mentorship- Guide and elevate mid-level and junior designers through critique and informal knowledge sharing. Non-negotiable at senior level. Design system contribution- Create new patterns for agent surfaces where existing components don't meet the need, and contribute to token architecture.
