Description of Work This is position is at Alexander Correctional Institution in Taylorsville, North Carolina. Alexander Correctional is a closed custody male facility with approximately 1,000 beds. Work in this position involves assisting in planning, supervising, and coordinating activities in a close custody institution. Employees supervise Correctional Sergeant III's. Reporting to the Correctional Captain III, this position independently provides support to the Correctional Captain and is primarily responsible for: - Providing supervision for subordinate staff, conducting shift line-up, making shift assignments, and inspecting all personnel to determine if they are physically and mentally capable of assuming an assigned post. - Completing, reviewing, and maintaining employee time reports, duty rosters, leave schedules, performance evaluations and administrative forms. - Conducting investigations as assigned both for offender and employee disciplinaries. - Monitoring and maintaining assigned employee equipment, ensuring that all assigned equipment is operational. - Conducting inspections of housing units and other buildings, grounds, and posts to ascertain that officers are alert, that discipline is being maintained, NCDAC policy is being followed, and that assignments are carried out properly. - Identifying training needs and coordinating delivery of training to subordinate staff. - Conducting searches of staff, visitors, and offenders for contraband. - Responding to emergency situations as needed. - Serving as the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the facility in the absence of the Correctional Captain. Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences Salary Grade Range: $45,431.00 - $79,504.00 Candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement. The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/ Management Preferences are not required. About The Division of Institutions: The Division of Institutions manages the daily operations of all state-operated prison facilities across North Carolina. Facilities are categorized by custody levels (minimum, medium, close) and house individuals serving sentences for felony convictions. The division provides safety, security, and rehabilitative services through trained custody staff, program facilitators, and administrative personnel.
