About the role

The Water Operator I performs journey level work in the monitoring and operation of a water purification plant, wastewater treatment plant or a system of pumping stations to ensure water service need of customers are met and that quality standards established by regulatory agencies are continuously met. Essential Functions 1. Works collaboratively with counterparts to operate a water purification plant, wastewater treatment plant or a system of pumping stations to ensure continuous water service, which meets established guidelines. 2. With limited supervision, monitors system performance, adjusting equipment, processes, computerized pumping stations, and other related assets as needed to ensure a constant water supply, quality of water, and/or effectively treated effluent. 3 . Reads gauges and instruments, gathers samples, and conducts tests to ensure proper functioning of equipment and provide emergency response in case of failure. 4 . Inspects equipment, checks for safety hazards, unusual conditions, and possible malfunctions to ensure continuous operation of equipment, and reduce maintenance repairs. 5 . Maintains routine paperwork to ensure proper documentation of flows, volumes, performance graphs, and other operational adjustments as required by regulatory agencies. 6. Collects grab samples and performs routine analysis to monitor water quality and ensure compliance. 7 . Accepts, inspects, and ensures chemical deliveries are unloaded properly, at the correct location while adhering to established policies and protocols for chemical management. 8 . Performs assigned clean up duties and minor preventive maintenance to maintain the facilities in a safe and effective condition. Maintains tools, vehicles, and equipment and keeps parts and supplies in order. 9 . Transports tools, materials, equipment, and supplies to work site. 10 . Ensures building and equipment checks, including remote locations are performed every shift. 11 . Coordinates with other divisions and groups within Dallas Water Utilities as needed due to operational needs and requirements. 12 . Enters and submits maintenance requests into an asset management system. 13 . Acts at a journey level operator and provides training for apprentice operators, including making recommendations for performance reviews to ensure productivity and quality is achieved. 14 . Participates in various training and learning opportunities to enhance knowledge and develop strong competency and skills. Performs other relevant work as needed or assigned. Knowledge and Skills Knowledge of Texas Commission on Environmental Quality rules and regulations for public water and/or wastewater systems. Knowledge of water purification or wastewater treatment plant equipment, processes and procedures or pump station equipment. Knowledge of mechanical principles of water pumps, valves, large electric motors, and related switch gear. Knowledge of chemistry. Ability to be detect detail and observe potential hazards and dangers. Ability to perform mathematical calculations. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to train apprentice operators. Ability to write reports and keep accurate records. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Ability to work either day or night shifts, holidays, and weekends. Ability to perform physical activities such as lifting, carrying, and walking, etc. Ability to use hand tools.

Requirements

  • EDUCATION:
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Two (2) years of work experience, of which one (1) must be hands-on in the field of the required license as defined by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) for applicable licensure.
  • LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:
  • Current TCEQ Class "C" or higher Operator's License
  • For Water Treatment Plants: Surface Water Operator's License
  • For Wastewater Treatment Plants: Wastewater Operator's License
  • For Pumping: Distribution OR Surface Water Operator's License
  • Valid Driver's License with good driving record
