About the role

The Facilities Operations Department within Facilities and Business Operations is seeking to hire a Generator Mechanic. The Generator Mechanic is responsible for the full range of generator maintenance and repairs needed to keep all university generators and equipment in good running condition. At this level the employee is expected to have advanced mechanical skills.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on diesel generators, portable generators, automatic transfer switches, and emergency power systems.
  • Diagnose and repair electrical, mechanical, and control system issues to ensure reliable emergency power operation.
  • Conduct required inspections and maintenance of emergency generator fuel storage tanks and related equipment.
  • Test generators and power systems in the field, evaluate performance, and make necessary adjustments.
  • Estimate repair needs, identify required parts and materials, and coordinate procurement through inventory, vendors, or supervisors.
  • Complete work orders accurately and on time, documenting labor, materials used, repairs performed, and follow-up recommendations.
  • Respond to emergency equipment failures and perform urgent repairs to restore critical operations.
  • Maintain inventory records, assist with equipment tracking, and support inventory control and security processes.
  • Monitor equipment conditions and report maintenance, safety, health, sanitation, or operational concerns to management.
  • Ensure compliance with university, local, state, and federal regulations, policies, and safety standards.
  • Collaborate with campus departments, contractors, and maintenance teams to support facility operations and special projects.
  • Lead, train, and provide guidance to staff, contractors, and peers working on diesel engines, generators, and power control systems.
  • Coordinate daily work assignments and operational activities in the supervisor's absence to ensure timely completion of maintenance tasks and work requests.
  • Participate in required safety training and support continuous improvement of maintenance operations.
  • Assist other Facilities Operations teams during staffing shortages, emergencies, or special operational needs.
  • Perform additional duties and special assignments as required.

Requirements

  • Completion of an approved apprenticeship program in automotive repair; or a high school diploma and 2+ years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience pursuant to Fla. Stat. 112.219(6) .
  • Demonstrated knowledge of industry standards, principles, and techniques in generator repair.
  • Familiarity with electrical distribution switchgear and its relationship to generator systems.
  • Demonstrated proficiency using standard office software applications for Integrated Work Management System.
  • Experience using industry-standard test and diagnostic equipment.
  • Experience working in a large institutional or campus setting such as a university, hospital, or municipality.
  • Hands-on experience servicing and repairing a variety of generator types and emergency power systems, including diesel and portable units.
  • Effective communication skills in English in order to work effectively with customers and team members, operate electronic equipment, comprehend standard safety procedures and utilize telecommunication devices.
  • Health Assessment Required:
  • UCF policy requires completion and passing of a physical exam for this position.
  • Special Instructions to the Applicants:
  • The anticipated salary range for this position is $20.29 to $27.14. The final salary will be determined based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, and internal equity considerations.
  • This position is eligible for 5% shift differential pay.
  • Position requires a valid Class E driver's license. The position may involve driving to various locations on and off campus to conduct University business.
  • May be required to participate in respiratory, medical examination and training in use of respirators.
