This is a great opportunity to contribute to CBC News Network, Canada's top breaking news channel and livestream. You excel at compelling, succinct writing for live, breaking news programming while delivering key context for the audience. You have a sharp eye and ear for compelling visual moments, a knack for crafting on-screen elements and a creative approach to visual storytelling. You know how to work with video, writing scripts that elevate visuals and sound to enhance the audience experience on all platforms. Video editing skills and knowledge of automated control rooms are assets. You thrive in live and developing news, skilfully juggling and prioritizing multiple tasks while clearly and respectfully communicating with your team. In this role, you must command advanced news judgment. You will contribute to editorial discussions, including pitching timely and relevant stories in a collaborative environment. You appreciate different perspectives, opinions and experiences, and promote the values of diversity, inclusion and a respectful work culture. You have a deep understanding of the CBC News Journalistic Standards and Practices and how it guides our work. This permanent part-time role is based in Toronto, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday. Key Tasks Pitch, create and write accurate, engaging and clear content for live programming that speaks directly to audiences and their needs. Generate accurate breaking news copy rapidly, source and process visuals, and deploy a variety of treatments to help viewers understand the story. Track stories and conduct research to ensure the delivery of the latest and accurate information and video. Collaborate with colleagues across platforms, including vetting material written or produced by others. Tell stories using CBC News Network on-screen elements, strategically understanding when and how to use various visual components. Edit, mix, and/or direct the editing and mixing of audio/ visual elements. Manage multiple writing projects simultaneously, adhering to strict deadlines and delivering quality work. Give and receive constructive feedback. Relevant skills and experience Minimum of five years of recent relevant experience in a daily live news environment. Minimum three years of experience writing for broadcast news. Excellent writing, editing and production skills. A university degree or equivalent. Demonstrated news judgment and understanding of CBC's Journalistic Standards and Practices. Broad range of interests and knowledge, such as politics, business, science, sports, entertainment, popular culture, technology and health and medicine. In-depth knowledge of Canadian and international news and current affairs. Exceptional communication, interpersonal and organizational skills. Proven ability to juggle multiple assignments, perform functions quickly and efficiently while always meeting deadlines. Experience using iNews, DTV, Vizrt and Avid Instinct. Familiarity with using graphic templates and how to use them to enhance the screen experience. Openness to experimenting with new approaches and crafting content that can work for audiences on multiple platforms. Lives and promotes the values of an inclusive and respectful work culture.
