The Opportunity Avantor is seeking a Senior Manager, Indirect Taxes to lead and further develop our indirect tax capabilities within the India Center of Excellence (COE). This role will lead the Indirect Tax function for Avantor with a focus on strategy, process design, and risk mitigation, including governance, execution, and continuous improvement. The role is responsible for identifying complex indirect tax issues, developing and implementing policies and procedures, and strategically enhancing processes and systems to support global compliance, reduce risk, and improve operational effectiveness.
Responsibilities
- Functional ownership of the global indirect tax function, including governance, compliance oversight, process consistency, and technical issue management. Serve as the primary point of accountability for indirect tax related risk management.
- Lead U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico sales & use tax with an emphasis on process design, strategy, and risk identification. Identify complex and recurring issues (e.g., nexus, exemptions, system logic, data integrity) and design process or system-based solutions. Oversee sales & use tax return filing and determination processes, while focusing on accuracy, sustainability, and systemic improvements.
- Lead EU value-added tax (VAT) with a focus on continuous improvement in VAT processes and reporting, ensuring efficiency, accuracy, and compliance across jurisdictions. Ensure appropriate VAT policies, procedures, and controls are established, documented, and implemented.
- Partner with stakeholders to define and implement indirect tax policies, procedures, and controls, ensuring consistent application across the organization.
- Provide leadership on indirect tax audits, including issue resolution strategy, audit support, and remediation of root causes.
- Lead enhancements to indirect tax software engine configurations, controls and supporting process to address complex issues and improve long-term effectiveness. Drive standardization and automation initiatives across indirect tax processes, leveraging technology to improve scalability and reduce risk.
- Lead, coach, and develop a high-performing team of indirect tax professionals across India.
- Support exposure analysis (ASC 450), voluntary disclosures, and other risk mitigating initiatives.
- Communicate effectively with senior management across functions and regions.
- Partner with regional leads, Manager, SALT (U.S.) and Senior Manager, Indirect Taxes (EU VAT) to align global compliance and advisory efforts.
- Support indirect tax advisory for contracts, supply chain, and M&A due diligence.
- Qualifications & Experience
- Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Tax, or related field.
- 8-12 years of indirect tax experience across U.S. S&U tax and EU VAT processes.
- Experience managing large professional teams.
- Demonstrated ability to identify complex problems, develop practical solutions, and implement process or policy changes.
- Proficiency with SAP, Vertex or OneSource Indirect Tax, and other tax technology.
- Advanced degree or professional certification (CPA, CA, CMA).
- Experience in multinational or shared service environments.
