About the role
We're looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to help us reinvent Postman's Notifications Platform for the next generation of AI-powered, agent-driven experiences. As Postman evolves to support agents and autonomous workflows, notifications become much more than simple alerts. They need to be contextual, intelligent, reliable, and deeply integrated into how users interact with the platform. You'll play a key role in building the foundation that makes that possible. This isn't a role focused on maintaining an existing system. It's an opportunity to rethink and rebuild a critical platform from the ground up that will power notification experiences across Postman for years to come. You'll have significant influence over the platform's architecture, reliability, and developer experience, working closely with teams across the company to build something scalable, intuitive, and easy to adopt.
Responsibilities
- As a Senior Backend Engineer on the Messaging team, you'll help design and build the next generation of our Notifications Platform.
- Some of the things you'll work on include:
- Reimagining the platform to support agentic, event-driven notification workflows.
- Designing backend systems that enable contextual notifications triggered by agents, workflows, and product events.
- Building reliable platform primitives for triggering, routing, delivery, retries, deduplication, rate limiting, user preferences, and notification lifecycle management.
- Partnering closely with teams building Agents and AI-powered experiences to understand their needs and translate them into scalable platform capabilities.
- Improving the developer experience through well-designed APIs, self-serve tooling, documentation, and integration workflows.
- Expanding observability across the entire notification lifecycle-understanding what triggered a notification, why it was sent, how it was delivered, and whether it succeeded.
- Ensuring the platform is designed with reliability and user trust at its core, minimising issues such as duplicate sends, stale notifications, noisy experiences, and incorrect targeting.
- Collaborating across infrastructure, product, design, support, and platform teams to deliver a seamless notification experience for both users and internal developers.
- Contributing to technical strategy, architecture reviews, engineering standards, and design discussions within the Messaging team.
- Mentoring engineers and helping raise the technical bar across the organisation.
- About You
- You're someone who enjoys building platforms that other engineers love to use and can confidently navigate complex distributed systems.
- We're excited to talk if you have:
- 6+ years of backend engineering experience building distributed systems, platform services, or large-scale backend applications.
- Strong proficiency in one or more common backend languages such as JavaScript, Python, Java, Go, PHP, or C++.
- Experience designing APIs, frameworks, or platform abstractions that are used by multiple engineering teams.
- A strong understanding of reliability, observability, operational excellence, and system failure modes.
- Experience working with event-driven architectures, messaging systems, queues, workflow engines, or orchestration platforms.
- The ability to translate product requirements into durable, scalable platform capabilities.
- A collaborative mindset and experience driving alignment across teams with different priorities.
- A preference for simple, reliable solutions over unnecessary complexity.
- Strong communication skills and a sense of ownership that helps move ambiguous projects from idea to production.
- Curiosity about AI and agentic product experiences, and how infrastructure needs to evolve to support them.
- And, ideally, a good sense of humour, we appreciate people who enjoy what they do.
- What Else?
- In addition to Postman's pay-on-performance philosophy, and a flexible schedule working with a fun, collaborative team, Postman offers a comprehensive set of benefits, including full medical coverage, flexible PTO, wellness reimbursement, and a monthly lunch stipend. Along with that,
