About the role

Are you a skilled Project Engineer looking for your next challenge? Vopak Terminals Australia is seeking a Project Engineer (CAPEX) to join our team for a 1-year fixed-term contract . Based at our Sydney Terminal , you will take the reins on an exciting capital asset project, driving specialized engineering solutions from design through to flawless execution and commissioning. Reporting directly to the Engineering and Technical Manager, you will serve as a key individual contributor, managing interdisciplinary engineering tasks, overseeing contract service providers, and ensuring our "Zero Harm" safety culture is upheld at every stage.

Responsibilities

  • In this role, you will lead complex engineering workflows and maintain tight project controls to deliver the project safely, on time, and within budget:
  • Engineering & Solutions Design: Lead process design, establish feasibility testing, and conduct crucial field inspections to ensure regulatory and structural integrity.
  • Project & Contract Management: Execute deliverables against the project management plan and manage day-to-day relationships with external contractors.
  • Project Controls & Budgeting: Track commitments and actual costs against the approved CAPEX budget, manage schedule milestones (using MS Project/Primavera P6), and provide transparent progress reporting.
  • HSSE Leadership: Enforce strict adherence to Permit to Work (PTW) systems and Job Safety Analyses (JSA) to achieve a TRIR of 0 on your managed site.
  • Quality & Commissioning: Ensure zero critical technical punches or system failures during commissioning and the initial 90 days of asset operation.

Requirements

  • To be successful in this role, you will bring a strong mix of technical expertise, heavy industrial experience, and a collaborative, solutions-focused mindset:
  • Education: A Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, or Civil/Structural). PMP certification or professional chartership is highly desirable.
  • Industrial Experience: 5 to 10+ years of project engineering experience within heavy industrial facilities (e.g., bulk liquid storage terminals, oil & gas, petrochemical, or chemical manufacturing).
  • CAPEX Track Record: Proven experience executing capital asset projects valued anywhere from $500k to $10M+.
  • Asset Expertise: Strong technical familiarity with industrial assets, including API storage tanks, piping networks, pumps, rotating equipment, and utility systems.
  • Technical Skills: Complete competence in project schedule management, costing/budgeting, and interpreting HSE compliance systems.
  • Soft Skills: Strong negotiation skills, a knack for managing complex information, and the ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences.
