CIMA+'s Energy and Resources Civil-Structural group specializes in the engineering of wide range of industrial structures, underground structures and hydraulic structures. Working closely with our clients, our dedicated professionals help to establish and understand the specific needs of a range of heavy and light industrial projects. We are currently seeking a Civil Engineering Technologist to join our structural group. This is a hybrid role based in our Vancouver office, requiring a minimum of three to four in-office days per week. The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge of concrete and steel structures, with a focus on structural inspections, condition assessments, and material testing (non-destructive and destructive methods). The successful candidate will support projects at various stages, including inspection, rehabilitation, and construction monitoring. This role is primarily field- and inspection-focused, requiring hands-on experience with inspection tools, working at heights, and in confined spaces. Main responsibilities will include: Conduct field inspections and condition assessments of concrete and steel structures (e.g., retaining walls, manholes, industrial structures, and underground infrastructure) Perform and assist with non-destructive testing (NDT) and destructive testing of construction materials, including: Concrete compressive strength testing (e.g., rebound hammer, core sampling) Rebar location and cover measurement (e.g., GPR, cover meters) Corrosion detection and assessment of reinforcing steel Operate and maintain inspection equipment and tools used in structural assessments Assist in planning and executing field investigation programs, including sampling and testing procedures Work in confined spaces and at heights in compliance with safety regulations Record, document, and interpret field data, and prepare inspection reports with photographs and findings Assist in the preparation of rehabilitation recommendations and technical reports under supervision Support preparation of drawings and sketches using AutoCAD/Revit based on inspection findings Estimate quantities and assist in cost evaluations for repair and rehabilitation work Monitor construction activities and verify compliance with drawings, specifications, and inspection requirements Coordinate with engineers, technicians, and other disciplines to support project delivery Travel to project sites across British Columbia as required Review progress and compliance of construction work in accordance with tender documents Support other members of the team who are earlier in their career and needing guidance Demonstrated ability to communicate with other project professionals from functions including structural, mechanical and design such as architects, engineers and technicians Occasionally, with guidance from a manager or team leader, liaise with clients to discuss various aspects of a project Able to work out of office for full day inspections Able to travel throughout British Columbia to potential job sites Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and shift work, as required to accommodate project and inspection schedules Availability to be on-call for urgent or emergency inspections, based on project needs Civil Engineering Technology Diploma or higher education 2+ years of relevant experience in structural inspections (concrete and steel) Working knowledge of concrete and steel behavior, deterioration mechanisms, and repair methods Experience with non-destructive testing (NDT) methods and inspection equipment is highly desirable Familiarity with tools such as: Rebound hammer Rebar locator / cover meter / GPR Corrosion detection equipment Concrete sampling and testing tools Working knowledge and hands-on experience with Proceq testing equipment (such as rebound hammer, rebar locator, and corrosion detection devices) used in concrete condition assessments Ability to perform basic technical calculations related to measurements, quantities, and field data interpretation Experience with AutoCAD and MS Office Strong written and verbal communication skills, particularly for technical reporting Ability to work independently in the field and as part of a multidisciplinary team Self-motivation and strong interpersonal and communication skills (both written and verbal) along with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks are essential. The successful candidate should also demonstrate a commitment to client service that is second to none.
