About the role

About the role: We are seeking a highly motivated, self-driven and skilled Research Technician to support research developing new genetic strategies for the control of agricultural pests. The research group works on sex determination, genetic biocontrol and molecular bioenergetics using biochemical and molecular biology approaches. You will provide technical support for the Meccariello research group, working collaboratively with other team members, other teams and visiting researchers, and contributing to specific aspects of ongoing projects. What you would be doing: Rear wild-type and transgenic lines of Ceratitis capitata (medfly) and Anastrepha ludens (mexfly), and set up genetic crosses. Assist with medfly embryo microinjection to generate transgenic strains. Carry out tissue dissections and molecular biology workflows, including genomic DNA extraction, RNA extraction, cDNA synthesis, PCR and qPCR. Support the day-to-day running of the main laboratory and its annexes, including instrument servicing, repairs, annual service contracts, ordering consumables and grant charging. Contribute to laboratory health and safety monitoring, waste stream monitoring, gas cylinder purchasing, project documentation, regulatory compliance and procurement of laboratory materials. Prioritise tasks within agreed schedules to meet project milestones, maintain meticulous records and actively participate in weekly lab meetings. Assist with supervision and guidance of graduate students on research techniques and conduct inductions for new staff and students. What we are looking for: An undergraduate degree in Biology, Genetics or a relevant subject, or equivalent vocational qualifications plus relevant work experience. Proven experience in a laboratory-based technical/scientific role, with strong practical experience in molecular biology techniques. Practical experience in collection, preparation, processing and/or storage of biological samples. Good knowledge of insect breeding, basic microbiological techniques, and DNA extraction, DNA quantification and PCR. Excellent computer literacy using Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. The ability to master new techniques, organise and prioritise your work, plan ahead in response to deadlines, work independently and collaboratively, and keep meticulous records. Good interpersonal and organisational skills, with an open-minded and cooperative approach and willingness to undertake any necessary training.
