About the role
You will serve as a research scientist within the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The candidate will be highly motivated, innovative and possess a strong quantitative background in spatial ecology, population ecology, disease ecology, epidemiology, and/or wildlife management, and proficiency in at least one programming language (e.g., R, Matlab, C++, etc...). FOR THE GS-11 GRADE LEVEL: Applicants who meet the basic requirements qualify for this grade level. FOR THE GS-11 LEVEL: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-09 level) that may have been obtained in the private or public (local, county, state, Federal) sectors which demonstrates: In consultation with the supervisor, leads scientific studies and manuscripts through peer-reviewed publication and presenting the findings at scientific conferences. Manipulates GIS/satellite imagery data describing landcover and spatial meteorological data and models GPS location data of animals to estimate movement behavior. Develops custom statistical models of wildlife disease data or simulation models of wildlife disease transmission using computer programming languages. Develops machine learning models of wildlife monitoring data or pipelines for applying pre-existing machine learning models for automating wildlife detections from photo and/or video data and management of those data. OR 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in Biological Sciences, Applied Statistics, Agriculture, Natural Resource Management, Chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying for this grade level.
