Specialist Associate, Specimen Curation (Entomology) & Molecular Lab Support (12 months contract)

Requirements

• Diploma holders or Bachelor's Degree holders
• Must be able to speak and write English proficiently
• Must have fundamental knowledge of biodiversity concepts
• Must not be afraid of seeing, and handling dead animals
• Must have a keen interest in insects and the natural world
• Patience and able to cope with repetitive work, with ability of having fine hand motor skills for handling specimens (especially dried, pinned insects) without damaging them
• Able to work in a team and independently
• Open to learning new skills and assist in fieldwork
• Must not be afraid of moderate heights (for work carried out above ground level)
• Able to use Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel
• Must be able to carry a fire extinguisher weighing at least 3KG with one arm while holding the nozzle in the other arm
• Must be able to work on weekends (Saturdays and Sundays) & Public Holidays on a shift basis; and occasional irregular hours (e.g., night and dawn field surveys) as and when required
• Has no known allergies to ethanol, moth balls (naphthalene or 1,4-dichlorobenzene), and formaldehyde.
• Able to do basic lab work, including pipetting, operating a centrifuge and a thermocycler
• Desirables:
• Have knowledge of photography techniques (especially macrophotography)
• Class 3 vehicle driving licence

Job Purpose The Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum (LKCNHM) is Singapore's only natural history museum, located at the National University of Singapore. We are looking for a motivated and hands-on individual who will assist with (1) Curation of the museum's entomological collection, (2) Assist in obtaining of molecular barcodes for insect Biodiversity Discovery, and (3) specimen collection efforts in local and overseas field surveys. Primary Duties: 1. Curation of the museum's entomological collections, involving a. Sorting, Preserving and vouchering of specimens. b. Maintenance of specimens, their containers and preservatives. c. Packing and mailing of specimen loans to other institutions. 2. Supporting Biodiversity discovery work with benchwork for Barcoding. 3. Participating in local and overseas field surveys and specimen collections. Ancillary Duties: 1. Assisting Research visitors and students, and oversee volunteers in collections Maintenance of the Museum's building facilities, and gallery. 2. Other duties as and when assigned. Training has been provided by curators and managers on the methods and safe practices of handling preservatives, specimens and reagents. Additional training will be provided on gallery and facilities maintenance matters.
