Job Summary The incumbent is responsible for collecting data and managing databases at the HPB research unit within the Division of General Surgery. The Database Assistant supports research activities through ethics/QAQI applications, data collection, and database maintenance. Organizational Status The UBC Faculty of Medicine Department of Surgery educates students at the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels, and pursues research to make innovative advancements in knowledge and practice to improve health. The Department consists of more than 600 physicians, surgeons, scientists and educators and over 70 administrative, research and technical staff, distributed across British Columbia. There are nine divisions in the following specialties: Cardiac Surgery, General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Otolaryngology, Pediatric Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Radiation Oncology, Thoracic Surgery and Vascular Surgery. The Department is also home to the Branch for Global Surgical Care (BGSC). The Database Assistant reports directly to the Research Manager. The Database Assistant also receives guidance and direction from the Principal Investigator (PI), Dr. Peter Kim and will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team in patient care including surgery, interventional radiology and medical oncology. Work Performed - Assists with the maintenance and updating of existing databases, ensuring data integrity and security. - Assists in the design and implementation of future databases, including coordinating meetings to get direction and input from PIs and patient care team members. - Supports the communications of new databases to multidisciplinary team members. - Collects additional data (both retrospective and prospective) from electronic medical records. - Assists in the design and implementation of data collection tools, surveys, and questionnaires. - Provides technical support and training to research team members on database usage. - Contribute to a respectful, inclusive working environment. - Perform other responsibilities, as required. Working Conditions The incumbent will work in an office environment at Diamond Health Care Centre. Consequence of Error/Judgement The incumbent will have access to confidential data. Exercising poor judgment and lack of appropriate consultation with research team members and supervisors can adversely affect the viability and validity of research projects or programs, and may compromise the Division of General Surgery and the Department of Surgery's ability to secure grant-based funding for future research projects.
