Pay Range: $27.59 - $35.86 Scheduled Weekly Hours: 40 Position Overview 4/10 hours shifts 6a-4:30pm and/or 7am-5:30pm SUMMARY (BASIC PURPOSE OF THE JOB) Works with surgeons and other health care practitioners providing surgical care to patients in a variety of settings. Handles instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during surgical procedures. Has an understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon. Possesses the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure through maintenance of the sterile field. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Education: High school diploma or GED. Completion of a New Jersey approved or accredited program for surgical technicians or graduate of an LPN school with current LPN license. Certification from nationally recognized body for surgical technician preferred. Experience: 2 years cardiac OR experience preferred Other Credentials: AHA BLS. Non-Licensed must obtain before end of orientation period Knowledge and Skills: Specialty surgical services may require specific training, experience, knowledge, and skills. Special Training: Certification from Nationally recognized body for Surgical Technician preferred and encouraged. Completion of designated annual competencies. Mental, Behavioral and Emotional Abilities: Excellent attention to detail. Excellent listening skills. Usual Work Day: 10 Hours ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Anticipates the needs of the surgeon, which includes passing instruments, sutures and other items appropriate to the procedure. Assists the surgeon by retracting tissue, holding instrumentation to provide exposure and cutting suture under the direct supervision of the surgeon. Establishes and maintains an organized sterile field. Selects proper sterilization methods for instruments and equipment: sterilizes prior to procedure, and verifies instruments are sterile. Adheres to policies and procedures in aseptic techniques. Takes corrective action when any unsafe practice, conditions or break in aseptic technique observed and reports information to the circulating nurse. Assists with pulling cases and checks case cart for completeness, obtains supplies and equipment and determines them to be in good working order before a case begins. Prepares the operating room by opening sterile supplies, instruments and sutures based on scheduled procedure and surgeon preference card. Follows policies for scrubbing, gowning, gloving, setting up back table, draping and counting with the circulating nurse. Performs scrub assistance for all procedures. Assists the circulating nurse with implementing a plan of care to include positioning, confirmation of operative site, updating physician preference cards, care of specimens, and room turnover. Accounts for instruments, trays, implants, before during and after the case. Begins Sterilizing process while in the surgical suite by counting for completeness of tray, initiating cleansing/sterilizing process. Monitors and accesses supplies in medication storage areas including needles and syringes.
