Responsibilities

  • Develop, monitor, and review clinical ophthalmology employees to assure the highest-level functioning team and demonstrates core standards of exceptional customer service.
  • Implement operational and strategic plans to improve ambulatory and surgical work assignments.
  • Prepare and support clinical staffing work schedules including ambulatory, OR, in addition to on-call weekends, nights and holidays.
  • Maintains inventory of clean and sterilized surgical equipment, instruments, and supplies in accordance with UMMC and regulatory standards.
  • Assesses the equipment, instrument, and supply needs for surgical procedures and ensures availability and ensures the proper functioning of surgical and ambulatory instruments, equipment, and supplies during clinic and OR surgical procedures.
  • Provides basic surgical support in ambulatory and surgical areas including room set up, sterile field management, handling of specimen and instruments, and room turnover.
  • Follows infection control policies, AORN recommendation practices, OSHA guidelines, and other regulatory requirements in the daily practice in order to assure a safe work environment for self, coworkers, and patients.
  • Performs administrative duties such as reviewing and scheduling patient appointments, surgeries, takes patient histories, answers phones and handles correspondence.
  • Takes anatomical and functional ocular measurements, tests ocular functions including visual acuity, visual fields, lensometry, tonometry, keratometry readings, corneal topography, strabismus measurements, retinoscopy and sensorimotor functions.
  • Administers topical ophthalmic medications as directed by the ophthalmologist. Provides patient education.

  • Ophthalmic certification from the International Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology.
