About the role

The Office of Inspector General (OIG) is an independent office whose mission is to promote excellence, integrity, and accountability throughout the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). In our dynamic environment, the OIG conducts investigations, audits, evaluations, and inspections to enhance program effectiveness and efficiency and to detect and prevent waste, fraud, and mismanagement in DHS programs and operations. All applicants must meet the below Basic Requirement. In addition to meeting basic requirements applicants must meet the below specialized experience or the education substitution for each grade level as listed below. Specialized Experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. GS-07: You qualify for the GS-07 grade level if you have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience at this level includes: Researching and analyzing information from a variety of sources such as, programs, case studies, and/or policies to draw conclusions and write reports; AND Writing informational reports that reflect statements of fact rather than opinion. OR 1 year of graduate level education or superior academic achievement. Applicant can qualify on Superior academic Achievement if: 1. Class standing -- Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses 2. Grade-point average (G.P.A.) -- Applicants must have a grade-point average of: 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on their official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2years of the curriculum. 3.. Election to membership in a national scholastic honor society -- Applicants can be considered eligible based on membership in one of the national scholastic honor societies recognized by the Association of College Honor Societies. OR A combination of the above-defined education and experience which has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. GS-09: You qualify for the GS-09 grade level if you have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience at this level includes: Researching and analyzing information from a variety of sources such as, programs, case studies, and/or policies to draw conclusions and write reports; Writing informational reports that reflect statements of fact rather than opinion; AND Giving informal briefings in a business setting. OR 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree. OR A combination of the above-defined education and experience which has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. NOTE: If you are selected for an interview, a writing exercise may be administered as part of the interview process. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. The qualification requirements listed above must be met by the closing date 07/01/2026 of this announcement. The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees. If you are currently, or have been within the last 5 years, a political Schedule A, Schedule C, Non-career SES or Presidential Appointee employee in the Executive Branch, you must disclose this information to the Human Resources Office.
