About the role

The Humane League (THL) is a global nonprofit ending the abuse of animals raised for food. THL fosters a high-energy culture of teamwork and mission-driven problem solving, and we have earned recognition as Top Charity from Animal Charity Evaluators for all of their rating periods. Over the past few years, we've grown to a staff of 100+ talented individuals dispersed around the world. At THL, how animals are treated in the food system is at the forefront of our everyday work. We welcome all mission-aligned candidates to apply, no matter where you are in your journey to end the abuse of animals raised for food. YOUR OPPORTUNITY The Open Wing Alliance (OWA), a program of The Humane League, is a global coalition of approximately 80 animal protection organizations across 70+ countries united in a common goal: to end the abuse of chickens worldwide. For the past several years, we have focused our efforts on eliminating battery cages by securing cage-free policies from major retailers, restaurants, and manufacturers, and in Europe many groups are now working to secure commitments for chickens bred for meat. OWA groups share tactics, support and resources to secure meaningful wins for animals, specializing in institutional campaigning that can be tailored to our members' unique circumstances and challenges. As the Associate Director of OWA Europe, you will lead the strategic development and execution of our OWA work in Europe, manage and develop regional staff, and strengthen the effectiveness and alignment of OWA member organizations. You will play a key role in expanding OWA's presence and impact, supporting coordinated corporate campaigns, and ensuring regional efforts contribute to broader organizational goals that ultimately result in real change for animals. This position requires a strong understanding of corporate campaigning or coalition-based advocacy, as well as the ability to manage complex stakeholder relationships across diverse cultural and regional contexts. You will work closely with internal teams and OWA members to align on priorities, evaluate progress, and drive coordinated action to end the abuse of chickens across Europe. This position reports to the Director of Open Wing Alliance. This is a full-time, remote position. To leverage a global talent pool, this position is open to candidates in the following countries: Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Sweden, or the United Kingdom. The successful candidate must be authorized to work in and reside within one of these specified countries whilst undertaking this role. Please submit applications and all supporting documents in English. As English is THL's primary organizational language, an intermediate level of English proficiency is required. THL defines this as the ability to 'handle most situations likely to arise' and 'interact with native speakers with a degree of fluency that makes interaction possible.' Candidates may be asked to undertake an English proficiency test as part of the recruitment process. Those who go on to work with THL are able to use the built-in translation features available in all of THL's primary tools to support their work, if desired. To the extent permitted by law, in order to enable collaboration with other global team members, you may be required to work occasional hours outside of 9am - 5pm, depending on your time zone. This position requires domestic and international travel, equivalent to 6 or more trips per year. CORE RESPONSIBILITIES Team Leadership & Management Lead, manage, and develop a team of regional staff (two direct reports), setting clear goals, monitoring performance, and providing ongoing coaching and feedback. Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performing team culture that supports professional development and accountability. Establish strong team structures, workflows, and performance expectations to ensure effective delivery of regional goals. Strategy Develop and lead the execution of OWA's strategy across Europe, ensuring alignment with global priorities and organizational goals. Translate coalition-wide goals into clear regional plans, setting priorities, allocating resources, and ensuring effective execution across the region and subregions. Guide decision-making on regional campaign priorities, member support, and resource allocation. Oversee grant decisions in OWA Europe, ensuring funds are allocated to the most impactful areas. Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of OWA Europe's regional strategies and initiatives, using data and insights to refine approaches and improve outcomes. Identify emerging opportunities, risks, trends in the European corporate campaigning and advocacy landscapes. Stay up to date on the wider European animal movement progress, e.g. political developments. Coalition & Stakeholder Engagement Build and maintain strong relationships with member organizations
