About the role
Introduction You will join a team focused on FPGA-based system design and communication architectures within ASML in Veldhoven. The team works on developing efficient, scalable, and cost-effective solutions for data transfer in embedded systems. This internship focuses on exploring lightweight communication link standards suitable for low-cost and low-power FPGA applications. Your work will contribute to identifying and prototyping efficient communication solutions that can be reused across multiple systems, supporting future designs with improved performance and reduced resource usage. Your assignment In this internship, you will investigate, design, and validate lightweight communication protocols for FPGA-based systems. You will evaluate different communication approaches and develop a practical implementation based on your findings. The goal is to create a robust and efficient communication link suitable for embedded applications. Your main responsibilities will be: Investigate and compare lightweight communication link standards Evaluate protocols based on performance, complexity, scalability, and resource usage Select or define a suitable communication link architecture Develop a proof-of-concept HDL design (transmitter, receiver, and framing/synchronization) Integrate and test the design on FPGA hardware platforms Perform measurements such as signal integrity, throughput, and reliability Validate and refine the solution based on hardware testing results Document the design choices, architecture, and experimental results Demonstrate a working prototype of the communication link This is a masters non thesis/thesis internship for 6 months, for 5 days per week (3 days on-site). The start date of this internship is as of September 2026. Your profile To be suitable for the internship, you: Are pursuing a masters degree in electrical engineering, embedded systems, computer engineering, or software engineering Have knowledge of VHDL, FPGA, and high-speed electronics needed Have experience with programming in C, C++, or a similar language Show analytical thinking and a structured way of working Communicate clearly and collaborate effectively in a team This position requires access to controlled technology, as defined in the United States Export Administration Regulations (15 C.F.R. § 730, et seq.). Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to access such controlled technology prior to beginning work. Business demands may require ASML to proceed with candidates who are immediately eligible to access controlled technology.
